John 16 meaning explained in AI Summary

Jesus anticipates his departure and the arrival of the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete, who will come as an advocate and comforter (John 16:7). The Paraclete will guide the disciples into all truth and empower them to continue Jesus' work (John 16:13-15). While the disciples will experience sorrow in his absence, Jesus promises them joy as they come to understand his purpose and mission (John 16:20-24).

This chapter continues Jesus' farewell discourse to his disciples, focusing on the coming persecution and the Holy Spirit's role.

Key Points:

  • Persecution is Coming (1-4): Jesus warns his disciples that they will face hatred and even death because of their association with him. He explains that the world doesn't understand him or his followers.
  • The Work of the Holy Spirit (5-15): Jesus promises to send the Holy Spirit, the Advocate, who will:
    • Convince the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment.
    • Guide the disciples into all truth.
    • Glorify Jesus.
  • Sorrow Turned to Joy (16-24): Jesus acknowledges the disciples' impending grief at his departure but assures them their sorrow will turn into joy, a joy no one can take away. He encourages them to pray in his name, promising to answer their prayers.
  • Plain Speech and Courage (25-33): Jesus explains that he has spoken in figures of speech but will soon speak plainly about the Father. He encourages them to be courageous, reminding them that he has overcome the world.

Overall Message:

Chapter 16 prepares the disciples for the difficult times ahead, assuring them of the Holy Spirit's presence and power. It emphasizes the importance of faith, prayer, and courage in the face of opposition. Ultimately, it points to the victory Jesus has already won over the world, offering hope and strength to his followers.

John 16 bible study ai commentary

In John 16, Jesus continues His Farewell Discourse, preparing His disciples for His imminent departure. He moves from warning them about coming persecution to explaining the crucial, advantageous ministry of the Holy Spirit who will succeed Him on earth. The chapter pivots from the disciples' sorrow and confusion to a profound promise of unconquerable joy and peace, grounded not in their circumstances, but in Christ’s ultimate victory over the world. It serves as a vital bridge, explaining the transition from Jesus' physical presence to the Spirit's indwelling presence in the life of the church.

John 16 Context

This chapter is part of the Upper Room or Farewell Discourse (John 13-17), Jesus' final intimate teaching to His eleven apostles before His arrest and crucifixion. The disciples are anxious and sorrowful, still grappling with the idea of a Messiah who must suffer and leave them. The concept of synagogue expulsion (aposynagƍgos) was a terrifying prospect for a 1st-century Jew, meaning total social, economic, and religious ostracization. Jesus’ words are meant to be a preemptive anchor for their faith, equipping them to withstand the coming hostility from both Jewish religious authorities and the Roman world (kosmos).

John 16:1

"All this I have told you so that you will not fall away."

In-depth-analysis

  • Jesus' explicit purpose is preventative. Forewarning is a form of spiritual armament. Knowing that hardship is part of God's plan, not a sign of His absence, strengthens faith.
  • "Fall away": Greek skandalizƍ. It means to be scandalized, to take offense, or to stumble in one's faith. The cross and the persecution that followed were the ultimate potential stumbling blocks for the disciples.

Bible references

  • Matthew 24:9-10: '...they will deliver you up to tribulation and put you to death... And then many will fall away...' (Predicts persecution and falling away).
  • Mark 14:27: 'And Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away, for it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’”' (Specific prediction for that night).

Cross references

1 Cor 1:23 (cross is a stumbling block), 2 Tim 4:16 (Paul abandoned), Joh 15:18 (world's hatred).

John 16:2-3

"They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God. They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me."

In-depth-analysis

  • Out of the synagogue: aposynagƍgos. A severe form of excommunication with deep social and spiritual implications. It defined the believer's new identity as separate from institutional Judaism.
  • "Offering a service to God": This highlights the danger of zealous, yet ignorant, religiosity. Persecutors would act out of a distorted sense of divine duty.
  • The root cause of this persecution is defined as spiritual ignorance: a failure to know God the Father and the Son. This isn't intellectual but relational ignorance.

Bible references

  • Acts 26:9-11: 'I myself was convinced that I ought to do many things in opposing the name of Jesus of Nazareth... I persecuted them even to foreign cities.' (Saul/Paul as a perfect example of this mindset).
  • Galatians 1:13-14: '...I persecuted the church of God violently... being extremely zealous... for the traditions of my fathers.' (Paul's testimony of his former zeal).
  • John 15:21: 'But all these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me.' (Reiterates the reason for persecution).

Cross references

Acts 7:58-8:1 (Stephen's martyrdom), Rom 10:2 (zeal without knowledge), 1 Cor 2:8 (rulers crucified out of ignorance), 1 Tim 1:13 (Paul acted in ignorance).

John 16:4

"I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you."

In-depth-analysis

  • The purpose of prophecy is not just prediction, but confirmation. When the events occur, the disciples' faith is not shattered but confirmed, because Jesus told them beforehand.
  • Jesus' presence had been a protective buffer for the disciples. His departure necessitates a new level of understanding and spiritual fortitude.

Bible references

  • John 13:19: 'I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am he.' (The core principle of predictive prophecy in John's Gospel).
  • John 14:29: 'And now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe.' (Jesus repeats this principle multiple times).

Cross references

Luke 22:35-36 (change in missionary approach), Matt 9:15 (bridegroom taken away).

John 16:5-7

"But now I am going to him who sent me. None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things. But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you."

In-depth-analysis

  • The disciples' grief (lypē) has blinded them. They are so focused on their loss that they fail to ask the right questions and see the greater purpose.
  • "For your good": Greek sympherei, meaning it is advantageous, profitable, or expedient. This is a startling re-framing of His death. The presence of the indwelling Spirit in all believers everywhere is a greater advantage than the localized physical presence of Jesus.
  • Advocate: Paraklētos. A rich term meaning Helper, Advocate, Counselor, or Comforter. His arrival is contingent on Jesus' glorification (ascension).

Bible references

  • Acts 2:33: 'Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing.' (Direct fulfillment: Pentecost happens after the ascension).
  • John 7:39: '...for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.' (The same theological sequence established earlier).
  • John 14:16-17: 'And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth...' (The initial promise of the Paraclete).

Cross references

Joh 14:1 (let not your hearts be troubled), Psa 68:18 & Eph 4:8 (ascending and giving gifts).

John 16:8-11

"When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: in regard to sin, because they do not believe in me; in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned."

In-depth-analysis

This section details the forensic, or prosecutorial, work of the Holy Spirit toward the world (kosmos). He is the prosecuting attorney revealing the world's true state before God.

  • He will convict: Greek elenchƍ, meaning to expose, convict, or prove wrong.
  • Sin: The Spirit exposes the foundational sin of humanity: unbelief in Jesus Christ. All other sins are symptomatic of this core rejection.
  • Righteousness: The Spirit vindicates Jesus' righteousness. His ascension to the Father is the ultimate proof that He was righteous and accepted by God, overturning the world's verdict (crucifixion). The world lacks this righteousness.
  • Judgment: The Spirit proclaims that judgment is already a reality. The "prince of this world" (Satan) was decisively judged and defeated at the cross. By rejecting Jesus, the world aligns itself with its defeated ruler and falls under the same condemnation.

Bible references

  • John 12:31: 'Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out.' (The moment of judgment is the cross).
  • Acts 2:36-37: '...“Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.” Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart...' (The Spirit's conviction through Peter's preaching).
  • Colossians 2:15: 'He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.' (The victory over Satanic powers at the cross).

Cross references

Zec 12:10 (spirit of grace and pleas), Rom 3:20 (knowledge of sin through the law), Heb 2:14 (destroy the one who has power of death), 1 Joh 3:8 (Son of God destroys devil's works).

Polemics: This passage counters a view of the Spirit as merely a passive, internal comforter. Scholars emphasize that His primary mission toward the kosmos is aggressive and judicial. He prosecutes the world's case, using the church as His evidence and witness, proving the world wrong and Jesus right.

John 16:12-15

"I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”

In-depth-analysis

  • More than you can bear: The disciples lacked the spiritual framework to understand the full implications of the cross and resurrection. The Spirit would be their teacher.
  • Guide you into all the truth: The Spirit’s ministry is one of illumination and application of the truth embodied in Jesus. This is the foundation for the inspiration of the New Testament.
  • Not speak on his own: This emphasizes the perfect unity and deference within the Trinity. The Spirit’s message is not a new revelation, but the ongoing unfolding of the Son’s revelation, which comes from the Father.
  • He will glorify me: The primary work of the Spirit in a believer's life is to make Jesus central, to reveal His glory, and to conform the believer to His image.
  • This section is a profound statement of Trinitarian theology: the Spirit speaks what He receives from the Son, and the Son possesses all that the Father has.

Bible references

  • John 14:26: 'But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.' (A parallel statement on the Spirit's teaching role).
  • 1 Corinthians 2:10: '...these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the deep things of God.' (The Spirit as the agent of divine revelation).
  • Ephesians 3:4-5: '...the mystery of Christ, which was not made known to the sons of men in other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit.' (The Spirit revealing the "mystery").

Cross references

Isa 11:2 (Spirit of wisdom), Rom 8:14 (led by the Spirit), Rev 1:1 (what must soon take place).

John 16:16-22

"...‘A little while, and you will see me no longer; and then a little while, and you will see me.’... Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them... “Very truly I tell you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into joy. A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you."

In-depth-analysis

  • "A little while" (mikron): This ambiguous phrase confused the disciples. It most immediately refers to the time between His death and His post-resurrection appearances, but it can also be seen as a paradigm for the whole church age (the time between His ascension and His second coming).
  • Sorrow turned to joy: This isn't just sorrow being replaced by joy, but the sorrow itself becoming the very source of joy. The crucifixion (sorrow) is the necessary precursor to the resurrection (joy).
  • Woman in labor: This Old Testament image (e.g., Isa 26:17) perfectly captures the Christian experience: intense, productive suffering (thlipsis) that gives way to a new reality of joy (chara).
  • Joy no one can take: The joy of the resurrection is not dependent on circumstances. It is a permanent, secure gift based on Christ's victory.

Bible references

  • Psalm 30:5: 'For his anger is but for a moment, and his favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning.' (Thematic parallel of temporary sorrow followed by joy).
  • Isaiah 66:7-9: '“Before she was in labor she gave birth; before her pain came upon her she delivered a son...' (Analogy of childbirth for new creation).
  • Luke 24:41: 'And while they still disbelieved for joy and were marveling, he said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?”' (The disciples' joy at the resurrection).

Cross references

1 Pet 1:6-8 (rejoicing amidst trials), Rom 8:18 (sufferings not worth comparing), Acts 2:46 (glad and generous hearts).

John 16:23-24

"In that day you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete."

In-depth-analysis

  • "In that day": The new era inaugurated by the resurrection and Pentecost.
  • No longer ask me anything: This doesn't mean ceasing inquiry, but a change in the mode of relationship. They will no longer have the need for the kind of questioning they do now, because the Spirit will guide them directly.
  • Ask in my name: This is a radical shift in prayer. It is not merely a formula but means praying with His authority, in alignment with His character, and on the basis of His completed work. It is praying as a representative of Christ, with direct access to the Father through the Son.
  • Joy will be complete: Answered prayer, flowing from this new relationship, is a source of full and complete joy.

Bible references

  • John 15:16: '...so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.' (Previous statement on this principle).
  • Ephesians 3:12: '...in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through our faith in him.' (Access to the Father through Christ).
  • 1 John 5:14: 'And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.' (Defines what it means to ask "in his name").

Cross references

Heb 4:16 (approach throne of grace with confidence), Joh 15:11 (that my joy may be in you), Phil 4:6 (let your requests be made known to God).

John 16:25-28

“Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. For the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”

In-depth-analysis

  • Figuratively: paroimia, meaning proverbs, veiled sayings, or allegories. Jesus acknowledges His teaching style has been enigmatic at times. Post-resurrection, through the Spirit, there will be a new clarity.
  • Father himself loves you: A groundbreaking statement. Their access is not secondary. Because they are united to the Son whom the Father loves, the Father loves them with a direct and personal love.
  • Vv 28: This is arguably the most concise summary of the entire incarnation, mission, and ascension of Christ in the Bible. It encapsulates his pre-existence, earthly ministry, and glorification in a single sentence.

Bible references

  • John 14:9: '...“Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father...' (The revelation of the Father through the Son).
  • John 17:23: '...so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me.' (The ultimate goal: that they experience the same love).
  • Philippians 2:6-11: (A detailed hymn about this same journey: from God, to world, leaving world, back to God).

Cross references

Joh 3:16 (For God so loved), Joh 17:8 (known you have sent me), Rom 5:1-2 (peace and access to grace), Joh 1:1,14 (the Word came from God and became flesh).

John 16:29-33

Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech... Now we can see that you know all things... This makes us believe that you came from God.” “Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. “A time is coming and in fact has come when you will be scattered, each to your own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me. “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

In-depth-analysis

  • The disciples declare their belief based on Jesus' apparent clairvoyance, but Jesus immediately challenges the depth and resilience of their newfound faith.
  • You will be scattered: A direct, sobering prophecy of their failure within hours (fulfilling Zech. 13:7).
  • Yet I am not alone: Jesus' constant, perfect communion with the Father stands in stark contrast to His abandonment by His friends.
  • The chapter concludes with a climactic promise that serves as the thesis for Christian life. It presents a stark dichotomy:
    • In Me: Peace (eirēnē)
    • In the World: Trouble/Tribulation (thlipsis)
  • Take heart! I have overcome the world: The final command is not to despair but to be courageous. The ground for this courage is not our strength, but His accomplished victory (nikaƍ). The battle is already won.

Bible references

  • Zechariah 13:7: ‘“Awake, O sword, against my shepherd... Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered...”' (The prophecy Jesus fulfills).
  • Matthew 26:56: 'But all this has taken place that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples left him and fled.' (The fulfillment).
  • John 14:27: 'Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you...' (The source of peace).
  • 1 John 5:4: 'For everyone born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.' (Links our victory directly to His).

Cross references

Isa 9:6 (Prince of Peace), Rom 5:1 (peace with God), 2 Tim 3:12 (all who desire to live godly will be persecuted), Rom 8:37 (more than conquerors), Rev 17:14 (Lamb will overcome them).

John chapter 16 analysis

  • The Divine Triangle of Revelation: This chapter brilliantly maps out the flow of revelation and ministry within the Trinity for the church age. The Father sends the Son, the Son sends the Spirit. The Spirit's work is not to draw attention to Himself, but to guide to the truth about, and glorify, the Son. This creates a God-ward focus for the believer.
  • The Great Reversal: A key theme is reversal. The world’s verdict on Jesus (condemned) is reversed by God (righteous). The disciples’ greatest sorrow (Jesus' death) becomes the source of their greatest joy (resurrection and the coming Spirit). The world's trial of Jesus is reversed by the Spirit's trial of the world.
  • The Two Spheres of Existence: Verse 33 perfectly delineates the two spiritual spheres a Christian simultaneously inhabits: "in Me" (a sphere of divine peace) and "in the world" (a sphere of inevitable tribulation). Christian maturity involves learning to experience the reality of the first sphere while navigating the pressures of the second. The outcome is not in doubt because Christ has already conquered the kosmos.

John 16 summary

Jesus prepares his disciples for his departure, warning them of persecution from a world that doesn't know God. He reframes his absence as an advantage, as it enables the coming of the Holy Spirit—the Advocate who will prosecute the world concerning sin, righteousness, and judgment. He promises that their profound sorrow will be transformed into an unbreakable joy, like a mother after childbirth, and that through His name, they will now have direct, loving access to the Father. He concludes by assuring them of His ultimate victory, offering them His peace in the midst of guaranteed worldly tribulation.

John chapter 16 kjv

  1. 1 These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended.
  2. 2 They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.
  3. 3 And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.
  4. 4 But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.
  5. 5 But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?
  6. 6 But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.
  7. 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
  8. 8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
  9. 9 Of sin, because they believe not on me;
  10. 10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;
  11. 11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
  12. 12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.
  13. 13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
  14. 14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
  15. 15 All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
  16. 16 A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father.
  17. 17 Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father?
  18. 18 They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith.
  19. 19 Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said unto them, Do ye enquire among yourselves of that I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me?
  20. 20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.
  21. 21 A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.
  22. 22 And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.
  23. 23 And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.
  24. 24 Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.
  25. 25 These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father.
  26. 26 At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you:
  27. 27 For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.
  28. 28 I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.
  29. 29 His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb.
  30. 30 Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God.
  31. 31 Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe?
  32. 32 Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
  33. 33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

John chapter 16 nkjv

  1. 1 "These things I have spoken to you, that you should not be made to stumble.
  2. 2 They will put you out of the synagogues; yes, the time is coming that whoever kills you will think that he offers God service.
  3. 3 And these things they will do to you because they have not known the Father nor Me.
  4. 4 But these things I have told you, that when the time comes, you may remember that I told you of them. And these things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you.
  5. 5 "But now I go away to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, 'Where are You going?'
  6. 6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.
  7. 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.
  8. 8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
  9. 9 of sin, because they do not believe in Me;
  10. 10 of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more;
  11. 11 of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
  12. 12 "I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.
  13. 13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.
  14. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.
  15. 15 All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you.
  16. 16 "A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me, because I go to the Father."
  17. 17 Then some of His disciples said among themselves, "What is this that He says to us, 'A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me'; and, 'because I go to the Father'?"
  18. 18 They said therefore, "What is this that He says, 'A little while'? We do not know what He is saying."
  19. 19 Now Jesus knew that they desired to ask Him, and He said to them, "Are you inquiring among yourselves about what I said, 'A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me'?
  20. 20 Most assuredly, I say to you that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; and you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into joy.
  21. 21 A woman, when she is in labor, has sorrow because her hour has come; but as soon as she has given birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world.
  22. 22 Therefore you now have sorrow; but I will see you again and your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you.
  23. 23 "And in that day you will ask Me nothing. Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you.
  24. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.
  25. 25 "These things I have spoken to you in figurative language; but the time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but I will tell you plainly about the Father.
  26. 26 In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for you;
  27. 27 for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and have believed that I came forth from God.
  28. 28 I came forth from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world and go to the Father."
  29. 29 His disciples said to Him, "See, now You are speaking plainly, and using no figure of speech!
  30. 30 Now we are sure that You know all things, and have no need that anyone should question You. By this we believe that You came forth from God."
  31. 31 Jesus answered them, "Do you now believe?
  32. 32 Indeed the hour is coming, yes, has now come, that you will be scattered, each to his own, and will leave Me alone. And yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me.
  33. 33 These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world."

John chapter 16 niv

  1. 1 "All this I have told you so that you will not fall away.
  2. 2 They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God.
  3. 3 They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.
  4. 4 I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you,
  5. 5 but now I am going to him who sent me. None of you asks me, 'Where are you going?'
  6. 6 Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things.
  7. 7 But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.
  8. 8 When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment:
  9. 9 about sin, because people do not believe in me;
  10. 10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer;
  11. 11 and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.
  12. 12 "I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.
  13. 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.
  14. 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you.
  15. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you."
  16. 16 Jesus went on to say, "In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me."
  17. 17 At this, some of his disciples said to one another, "What does he mean by saying, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,' and 'Because I am going to the Father'?"
  18. 18 They kept asking, "What does he mean by 'a little while'? We don't understand what he is saying."
  19. 19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, "Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me'?
  20. 20 Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.
  21. 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world.
  22. 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.
  23. 23 In that day you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.
  24. 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.
  25. 25 "Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father.
  26. 26 In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf.
  27. 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.
  28. 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father."
  29. 29 Then Jesus' disciples said, "Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech.
  30. 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God."
  31. 31 "Do you now believe?" Jesus replied.
  32. 32 "A time is coming and in fact has come when you will be scattered, each to your own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.
  33. 33 "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."

John chapter 16 esv

  1. 1 "I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away.
  2. 2 They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God.
  3. 3 And they will do these things because they have not known the Father, nor me.
  4. 4 But I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you. The Work of the Holy Spirit "I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you.
  5. 5 But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?'
  6. 6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.
  7. 7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.
  8. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:
  9. 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me;
  10. 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer;
  11. 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
  12. 12 "I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.
  13. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.
  14. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
  15. 15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
  16. 16 "A little while, and you will see me no longer; and again a little while, and you will see me."
  17. 17 So some of his disciples said to one another, "What is this that he says to us, 'A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me'; and, 'because I am going to the Father'?"
  18. 18 So they were saying, "What does he mean by 'a little while'? We do not know what he is talking about."
  19. 19 Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, "Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, 'A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me'?
  20. 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy.
  21. 21 When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world.
  22. 22 So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.
  23. 23 In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you.
  24. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.
  25. 25 "I have said these things to you in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father.
  26. 26 In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf;
  27. 27 for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.
  28. 28 I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father."
  29. 29 His disciples said, "Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not using figurative speech!
  30. 30 Now we know that you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that you came from God."
  31. 31 Jesus answered them, "Do you now believe?
  32. 32 Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me.
  33. 33 I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world."

John chapter 16 nlt

  1. 1 "I have told you these things so that you won't abandon your faith.
  2. 2 For you will be expelled from the synagogues, and the time is coming when those who kill you will think they are doing a holy service for God.
  3. 3 This is because they have never known the Father or me.
  4. 4 Yes, I'm telling you these things now, so that when they happen, you will remember my warning. I didn't tell you earlier because I was going to be with you for a while longer.
  5. 5 "But now I am going away to the one who sent me, and not one of you is asking where I am going.
  6. 6 Instead, you grieve because of what I've told you.
  7. 7 But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don't, the Advocate won't come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you.
  8. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God's righteousness, and of the coming judgment.
  9. 9 The world's sin is that it refuses to believe in me.
  10. 10 Righteousness is available because I go to the Father, and you will see me no more.
  11. 11 Judgment will come because the ruler of this world has already been judged.
  12. 12 "There is so much more I want to tell you, but you can't bear it now.
  13. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future.
  14. 14 He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me.
  15. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine; this is why I said, 'The Spirit will tell you whatever he receives from me.'
  16. 16 "In a little while you won't see me anymore. But a little while after that, you will see me again."
  17. 17 Some of the disciples asked each other, "What does he mean when he says, 'In a little while you won't see me, but then you will see me,' and 'I am going to the Father'?
  18. 18 And what does he mean by 'a little while'? We don't understand."
  19. 19 Jesus realized they wanted to ask him about it, so he said, "Are you asking yourselves what I meant? I said in a little while you won't see me, but a little while after that you will see me again.
  20. 20 I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn over what is going to happen to me, but the world will rejoice. You will grieve, but your grief will suddenly turn to wonderful joy.
  21. 21 It will be like a woman suffering the pains of labor. When her child is born, her anguish gives way to joy because she has brought a new baby into the world.
  22. 22 So you have sorrow now, but I will see you again; then you will rejoice, and no one can rob you of that joy.
  23. 23 At that time you won't need to ask me for anything. I tell you the truth, you will ask the Father directly, and he will grant your request because you use my name.
  24. 24 You haven't done this before. Ask, using my name, and you will receive, and you will have abundant joy.
  25. 25 "I have spoken of these matters in figures of speech, but soon I will stop speaking figuratively and will tell you plainly all about the Father.
  26. 26 Then you will ask in my name. I'm not saying I will ask the Father on your behalf,
  27. 27 for the Father himself loves you dearly because you love me and believe that I came from God.
  28. 28 Yes, I came from the Father into the world, and now I will leave the world and return to the Father."
  29. 29 Then his disciples said, "At last you are speaking plainly and not figuratively.
  30. 30 Now we understand that you know everything, and there's no need to question you. From this we believe that you came from God."
  31. 31 Jesus asked, "Do you finally believe?
  32. 32 But the time is coming ? indeed it's here now ? when you will be scattered, each one going his own way, leaving me alone. Yet I am not alone because the Father is with me.
  33. 33 I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world."
