Ezekiel 36 meaning explained in AI Summary

This chapter focuses on God's promise to restore Israel and vindicate His holy name.

Key Points:

  • God's judgment on Israel's enemies (vv. 1-7): God addresses the nations who mocked Israel's downfall and took over their land. He declares that their joy will be short-lived, and they will face judgment for their actions.
  • Promise of restoration for Israel (vv. 8-15): God promises to restore Israel's land, making it fruitful and abundant once again. He will bring His people back from exile and rebuild their cities. This restoration will prove to the nations that He is the Lord.
  • Reason for Israel's exile (vv. 16-21): God reminds Israel that their exile was a consequence of their sin and idolatry. Their wickedness defiled the land and His holy name among the nations.
  • Promise of spiritual renewal (vv. 22-32): God promises to cleanse Israel from their sin and give them a new heart and spirit. He will remove their heart of stone and replace it with a heart of flesh, enabling them to follow His commands.
  • Blessings of restoration (vv. 33-38): The chapter concludes with a beautiful picture of Israel's restored land, filled with people, livestock, and abundant harvests. This restoration will bring glory to God's name and demonstrate His faithfulness to His covenant promises.

Overall Message:

Ezekiel 36 is a message of hope and restoration for God's people. Though they faced judgment for their sin, God's love and faithfulness remained. He promised to bring them back to their land, cleanse them from their sin, and establish them as a testimony to His power and grace. This chapter foreshadows the future spiritual restoration of Israel and the ultimate fulfillment of God's promises.

Ezekiel 36 bible study ai commentary

Ezekiel 36 describes God's ultimate plan of restoration for both the land and the people of Israel. This restoration is not based on Israel's merit but is motivated solely by God's desire to sanctify His own holy name, which Israel had profaned among the nations. The chapter moves from a promise of physical, agricultural restoration of the land to the pinnacle promise of the New Covenant: a radical, internal, spiritual transformation of the people through a new heart, a new spirit, and the indwelling of God's own Spirit.

Ezekiel 36 context

The prophecy is given to Ezekiel during the Babylonian Exile (c. 586-538 BC). Jerusalem and the Temple are in ruins, and the people of Judah are scattered. The surrounding nations, particularly Edom, are gloating over Israel's demise and attempting to seize its land. This context of national devastation, despair, and international scorn is the backdrop for one of the Bible's most profound messages of hope and sovereign grace. God is not defeated; His plans are moving forward.

Ezekiel 36:1-7

"And you, son of man, prophesy to the mountains of Israel, and say, O mountains of Israel, hear the word of the LORD. Thus says the Lord GOD: Because the enemy said of you, ‘Aha!’ and, ‘The ancient high places are our possession,’ therefore prophesy and say... Because they made you desolate and swallowed you up on every side, so that you became a possession of the rest of the nations, and you became the talk and evil gossip of the people... surely in the fire of my jealousy I have spoken against the rest of the nations and against all Edom, who gave my land to themselves as a possession with wholehearted joy and utter contempt, that they might make its pasture a prey... therefore... surely the nations that are all around you shall themselves bear their own shame."

In-depth-analysis

  • Personification: God addresses the "mountains of Israel" directly. This personification shows His deep, covenantal connection to the land itself, not just the people.
  • The Taunt: The enemies' cry of "Aha!" and their claim over the "ancient high places" (bamot olam) signifies their belief that they have triumphed over Israel and Israel's God.
  • God's Jealousy: God's response is one of jealous anger. His jealousy is not petty but a righteous reaction to the violation of His covenant relationship with His people and His land. His name and honor are tied to them.
  • Vindication: The section promises a reversal. The nations who shamed Israel will themselves be put to shame. This establishes the theme of divine justice and vindication.

Bible references

  • Deuteronomy 32:43: "Rejoice, O nations, with his people, for he will avenge the blood of his servants..." (God's vengeance on behalf of his people).
  • Obadiah 1:12: "But you should not have gloated over the day of your brother in the day of his misfortune..." (A specific prophecy against Edom for their gloating).
  • Psalm 44:13-14: "You have made us a byword among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples." (Describes the shame Ezekiel is addressing).
  • Lamentations 2:15: "All who pass along the way clap their hands at you; they hiss and wag their heads at the daughter of Jerusalem: 'Is this the city that was called the perfection of beauty...?'" (Captures the taunts Israel endured).

Cross references

Joel 2:17-19 (removing Israel's reproach); Zeph 2:8-10 (punishment for Moab and Ammon's taunts); Ps 79:10 (Why should the nations say, 'Where is their God?').

Ezekiel 36:8-15

"But you, O mountains of Israel, shall shoot forth your branches and yield your fruit to my people Israel, for they are soon to come home... I will multiply people on you, the whole house of Israel, all of it... I will cause people to walk on you, my people Israel. And they shall possess you, and you shall be their inheritance... Thus says the Lord GOD: Because they say to you, ‘You devour people, and you bereave your nation of children,’... you shall no more devour people and no more bereave your nation of children..."

In-depth-analysis

  • Reversal of the Curse: The desolation described was a direct fulfillment of the covenant curses (Lev. 26). This prophecy is a direct reversal, promising renewed fertility and fruitfulness.
  • For My People: The land's restoration is explicitly for the benefit of "my people Israel," highlighting the imminent return from exile.
  • Repopulation: The promise to "multiply people on you" reverses the depopulation of the exile and promises a full restoration of "the whole house of Israel."
  • Reproach Removed: The land had a reputation as a place that "devours people," likely due to constant warfare, famine, and exile. God promises to remove this stigma, making it a place of life and security.

Bible references

  • Leviticus 26:32-33: "...I myself will lay waste the land... And I will scatter you among the nations..." (The curse being reversed).
  • Amos 9:14: "I will restore the fortunes of my people Israel, and they shall rebuild the ruined cities and inhabit them..." (A parallel promise of restoration).
  • Isaiah 51:3: "For the LORD comforts Zion... he makes her wilderness like Eden, her desert like the garden of the LORD." (The transformation of the land).

Cross references

Joel 2:21-27 (land's renewed abundance); Hos 2:21-23 (covenant with the land); Jer 31:5 (planting vineyards again).

Ezekiel 36:16-21

"The word of the LORD came to me: 'Son of man, when the house of Israel lived in their own land, they defiled it by their ways and their deeds... I poured out my wrath upon them... I scattered them among the nations... But when they came to the nations where they went, they profaned my holy name, in that people said of them, ‘These are the people of the LORD, and yet they had to go out of his land.’ But I had concern for my holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the nations..."

In-depth-analysis

  • Cause of Exile: This section clearly states the theological reason for the exile: Israel's sin (specifically idolatry, compared to the uncleanness of menstruation) defiled the covenant land.
  • Defiling (tame'): The land was consecrated to God; therefore, Israel’s sin was a sacrilege that polluted it, forcing a holy God to act.
  • Profaning God’s Name: In exile, Israel's situation became a source of blasphemy (hillul hashem). The pagan nations did not conclude "Israel sinned," but "Yahweh is a weak God, unable to protect His people or His land from our gods."
  • God's True Concern: God’s "concern" is not primarily for Israel’s comfort but for His own holy name and reputation among the nations. Their suffering damaged His testimony.

Bible references

  • Romans 2:24: "For, as it is written, 'The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.'" (Paul directly quoting the sense of this passage and Isaiah 52:5).
  • Leviticus 18:25, 28: "the land became unclean... so the land vomited out its inhabitants... lest the land vomit you out when you defile it..." (The principle of the land being defiled by sin).
  • Isaiah 52:5: "...continually all the day my name is despised. Therefore my people shall know my name..." (God's concern for His profaned name).

Cross references

Eze 20:9,14 (God acts for His name's sake); Ex 32:12 (Moses appeals to God's reputation); Dt 9:28 (lest the nations say the LORD was unable).

Ezekiel 36:22-25

"Therefore say to the house of Israel... It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for the sake of my holy name... And I will sanctify my great name, which has been profaned among the nations... And the nations will know that I am the LORD... when through you I vindicate my holiness before their eyes. I will take you from the nations and gather you... and bring you into your own land. I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses..."

In-depth-analysis

  • The Divine Motive: This is the theological core. God's grace is completely unmerited. Restoration is a sovereign act to sanctify (qadash), or vindicate the holiness of, His own name.
  • Ultimate Evangelism: The goal is that "the nations will know that I am the LORD." Israel’s restoration is the means to the end of God’s self-revelation to the world.
  • Gathering: The first act of restoration is the physical gathering from the nations, a reversal of the scattering.
  • Spiritual Cleansing: "Sprinkle clean water" evokes Levitical purification laws (e.g., Num 19) but symbolizes a far deeper, internal cleansing from the filth of sin and idolatry, making fellowship with a holy God possible. This is spiritual regeneration.

Bible references

  • Psalm 115:1: "Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to your name give glory, for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness!" (The same theological principle).
  • Hebrews 10:22: "...let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water." (The NT application of this imagery to salvation in Christ).
  • John 3:5: "Jesus answered, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.'" (Connects the cleansing ("water") and regeneration ("Spirit") spoken of here by Ezekiel).
  • Titus 3:5: "he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit." (Explicitly links God's mercy, washing/cleansing, and the Holy Spirit).

Cross references

Ps 51:2,7 (Wash me... I shall be whiter than snow); Isa 1:16 (Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean); 1 Cor 6:11 (you were washed... sanctified... justified); Zech 13:1 (a fountain for sin and uncleanness).

Ezekiel 36:26-27

"And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules."

In-depth-analysis

  • The Divine Surgery: This is the pinnacle of the New Covenant promise. God Himself performs a spiritual heart transplant.
  • Heart of Stone vs. Heart of Flesh:
    • Stone (ha'even): Represents the old nature. It is hard, dead, rebellious, and unresponsive to God.
    • Flesh (basar): Represents the new, regenerated nature. It is soft, alive, sensitive, and responsive to God's will.
  • A New Spirit: This is a new disposition, a new life principle within the person.
  • "My Spirit": God puts His very own Spirit (ruchi) inside the believer. This is the promised indwelling of the Holy Spirit. His presence is not just for comfort or guidance but is the very power source that causes obedience. It moves the believer from "have to" obey to "want to" obey.

Bible references

  • Jeremiah 31:33: "...I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people." (The parallel Old Testament description of the New Covenant).
  • 2 Corinthians 3:3: "...written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts." (Paul's direct allusion to Jeremiah and Ezekiel's prophecies).
  • Romans 8:9, 14: "You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you... For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God." (Defines a Christian by the indwelling Spirit).
  • Galatians 5:22-23: "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law." (The practical result of the indwelling Spirit).

Cross references

Eze 11:19-20 (a similar, earlier promise); Psa 51:10 (Create in me a clean heart); John 14:16-17 (promise of the Helper); 2 Cor 5:17 (new creation); Rom 5:5 (love poured out through the Holy Spirit).

Ezekiel 36:28-32

"You shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers, and you shall be my people, and I will be your God. And I will deliver you from all your uncleannesses... I will not do this for your sake, declares the Lord GOD; let that be known to you. Be ashamed and confounded for your ways, O house of Israel."

In-depth-analysis

  • Covenant Formula: "You shall be my people, and I will be your God" is the classic statement of the covenant relationship, now re-established on the basis of God's grace, not Israel's performance.
  • Grace and Shame: The result of experiencing such unmerited grace is not pride but a holy shame. The restored people will look back at their sinful past with disgust and loathing (qut), recognizing the depth of the grace they have received.
  • Reiteration: God emphatically repeats that His actions are "not for your sake." This repetition drills home the doctrine of sovereign grace and leaves no room for human boasting.

Bible references

  • Jeremiah 30:22: "And you shall be my people, and I will be your God." (The covenant formula).
  • Revelation 21:3: "...they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God." (The ultimate fulfillment of this promise).
  • Ezekiel 16:61, 63: "Then you will remember your ways and be ashamed... that you may remember and be confounded, and never open your mouth again because of your shame..." (Shame as a result of experiencing God's atoning grace).

Cross references

Lev 26:12 (original covenant promise); Dt 7:7-8 (God chose you because he loved you); Titus 2:14 (a people for His own possession).

Ezekiel 36:33-36

"Thus says the Lord GOD: On the day that I cleanse you from all your iniquities, I will cause the cities to be inhabited... And the desolate land shall be tilled... And they will say, ‘This land that was desolate has become like the garden of Eden’... Then the nations that are left all around you shall know that I am the LORD; I have rebuilt the ruined places and replanted that which was desolate. I the LORD have spoken, and I will do it."

In-depth-analysis

  • Like Eden: The restored land will be so transformed that it is compared to the Garden of Eden—the paradise ideal. This signifies perfect peace, provision, and beauty under God's blessing.
  • The Mission Accomplished: The chapter comes full circle. The nations who once mocked will now see the transformation and be forced to acknowledge the power and identity of God: "I am the LORD" (Ani YHWH). God's name is now sanctified before their eyes.
  • Divine Certainty: The promise ends with the emphatic "I the LORD have spoken, and I will do it." There is no doubt of its fulfillment.

Bible references

  • Isaiah 51:3: "For the LORD comforts Zion... he makes her wilderness like Eden, her desert like the garden of the LORD..." (The most direct parallel to the Edenic imagery).
  • Genesis 13:10: "And Lot lifted up his eyes and saw that the Jordan Valley was well watered everywhere (before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah), like the garden of the LORD..." (The original description of a paradise-like land).

Cross references

Eze 17:24 (all the trees will know that I am the Lord); Isa 61:4 (they shall build up the ancient ruins).

Ezekiel 36:37-38

"Thus says the Lord GOD: This also I will let the house of Israel ask me to do for them: to make them as numerous as a flock... As the flock for sacrifices, the flock at Jerusalem during her appointed feasts, so shall the waste cities be filled with flocks of people. Then they shall know that I am the LORD."

In-depth-analysis

  • Divine Responsiveness: God not only promises these things but also promises to be receptive to His people's prayers for these things. He invites them to participate in His plan through prayer.
  • Flocks of People: The imagery of being "numerous as a flock" fulfills the Abrahamic promise.
  • Sacred Flocks: The comparison is not to any flock, but to the "flock for sacrifices" at the great feasts in Jerusalem. This image combines two ideas:
    1. Vast Numbers: The city would be overflowing with these animals.
    2. Consecration: These were holy flocks, set apart for God. The restored people will be both numerous and consecrated to the LORD.

Bible references

  • Genesis 22:17: "I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore." (Fulfillment of the Abrahamic Covenant).
  • Zechariah 10:10: "...they shall be as numerous as they were before." (A post-exilic promise of repopulation).

Cross references

Jer 31:10 (He who scattered Israel will gather him); Jer 33:12 (flocks will again pass under the hands of the one who counts them); Acts 2:41 (thousands added to their number).

Ezekiel chapter 36 analysis

  • Progressive Revelation: The chapter beautifully progresses from the physical to the spiritual. It begins with the land ("mountains of Israel") and culminates with the human heart and the indwelling Spirit of God. It shows that God's ultimate plan is not merely geographical but relational and redemptive.
  • Multi-layered Fulfillment: This prophecy has seen, and will see, multiple layers of fulfillment:
    1. A Partial Physical Return: The return from Babylon under Zerubbabel, Ezra, and Nehemiah, where the land began to be restored.
    2. A Complete Spiritual Fulfillment: The coming of Christ and the inauguration of the New Covenant at Pentecost. Believers from all nations now receive a new heart and the indwelling Holy Spirit. The Church is the primary fulfillment of the "new heart" promise in this age.
    3. A Future Eschatological Fulfillment: Many theologians see a future, final fulfillment for ethnic Israel in their land, as described in passages like Romans 11:25-29, when the nation will turn to their Messiah and experience these promises in their totality.
  • Theology of Grace: The chapter is one of the Old Testament's clearest articulations of salvation by sovereign grace alone. It repeatedly crushes human pride ("not for your sake") and roots God's entire redemptive plan in His own character and His desire to glorify His name.

Ezekiel 36 summary

God promises to restore the desolate land of Israel and gather His scattered people from the nations. He declares this act is not for their sake, as they defiled His land and profaned His name, but for the sake of His own holiness. The restoration culminates in the central promise of the New Covenant: God will sovereignly give His people a new heart and new spirit, cleansing them from sin and putting His own Spirit within them to empower true obedience, all so that He will be known and glorified among the nations.

Ezekiel chapter 36 kjv

  1. 1 Also, thou son of man, prophesy unto the mountains of Israel, and say, Ye mountains of Israel, hear the word of the LORD:
  2. 2 Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because the enemy hath said against you, Aha, even the ancient high places are ours in possession:
  3. 3 Therefore prophesy and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because they have made you desolate, and swallowed you up on every side, that ye might be a possession unto the residue of the heathen, and ye are taken up in the lips of talkers, and are an infamy of the people:
  4. 4 Therefore, ye mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord GOD; Thus saith the Lord GOD to the mountains, and to the hills, to the rivers, and to the valleys, to the desolate wastes, and to the cities that are forsaken, which became a prey and derision to the residue of the heathen that are round about;
  5. 5 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Surely in the fire of my jealousy have I spoken against the residue of the heathen, and against all Idumea, which have appointed my land into their possession with the joy of all their heart, with despiteful minds, to cast it out for a prey.
  6. 6 Prophesy therefore concerning the land of Israel, and say unto the mountains, and to the hills, to the rivers, and to the valleys, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I have spoken in my jealousy and in my fury, because ye have borne the shame of the heathen:
  7. 7 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; I have lifted up mine hand, Surely the heathen that are about you, they shall bear their shame.
  8. 8 But ye, O mountains of Israel, ye shall shoot forth your branches, and yield your fruit to my people of Israel; for they are at hand to come.
  9. 9 For, behold, I am for you, and I will turn unto you, and ye shall be tilled and sown:
  10. 10 And I will multiply men upon you, all the house of Israel, even all of it: and the cities shall be inhabited, and the wastes shall be builded:
  11. 11 And I will multiply upon you man and beast; and they shall increase and bring fruit: and I will settle you after your old estates, and will do better unto you than at your beginnings: and ye shall know that I am the LORD.
  12. 12 Yea, I will cause men to walk upon you, even my people Israel; and they shall possess thee, and thou shalt be their inheritance, and thou shalt no more henceforth bereave them of men.
  13. 13 Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because they say unto you, Thou land devourest up men, and hast bereaved thy nations:
  14. 14 Therefore thou shalt devour men no more, neither bereave thy nations any more, saith the Lord GOD.
  15. 15 Neither will I cause men to hear in thee the shame of the heathen any more, neither shalt thou bear the reproach of the people any more, neither shalt thou cause thy nations to fall any more, saith the Lord GOD.
  16. 16 Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
  17. 17 Son of man, when the house of Israel dwelt in their own land, they defiled it by their own way and by their doings: their way was before me as the uncleanness of a removed woman.
  18. 18 Wherefore I poured my fury upon them for the blood that they had shed upon the land, and for their idols wherewith they had polluted it:
  19. 19 And I scattered them among the heathen, and they were dispersed through the countries: according to their way and according to their doings I judged them.
  20. 20 And when they entered unto the heathen, whither they went, they profaned my holy name, when they said to them, These are the people of the LORD, and are gone forth out of his land.
  21. 21 But I had pity for mine holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the heathen, whither they went.
  22. 22 Therefore say unto the house of Israel, thus saith the Lord GOD; I do not this for your sakes, O house of Israel, but for mine holy name's sake, which ye have profaned among the heathen, whither ye went.
  23. 23 And I will sanctify my great name, which was profaned among the heathen, which ye have profaned in the midst of them; and the heathen shall know that I am the LORD, saith the Lord GOD, when I shall be sanctified in you before their eyes.
  24. 24 For I will take you from among the heathen, and gather you out of all countries, and will bring you into your own land.
  25. 25 Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you.
  26. 26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.
  27. 27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.
  28. 28 And ye shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; and ye shall be my people, and I will be your God.
  29. 29 I will also save you from all your uncleannesses: and I will call for the corn, and will increase it, and lay no famine upon you.
  30. 30 And I will multiply the fruit of the tree, and the increase of the field, that ye shall receive no more reproach of famine among the heathen.
  31. 31 Then shall ye remember your own evil ways, and your doings that were not good, and shall lothe yourselves in your own sight for your iniquities and for your abominations.
  32. 32 Not for your sakes do I this, saith the Lord GOD, be it known unto you: be ashamed and confounded for your own ways, O house of Israel.
  33. 33 Thus saith the Lord GOD; In the day that I shall have cleansed you from all your iniquities I will also cause you to dwell in the cities, and the wastes shall be builded.
  34. 34 And the desolate land shall be tilled, whereas it lay desolate in the sight of all that passed by.
  35. 35 And they shall say, This land that was desolate is become like the garden of Eden; and the waste and desolate and ruined cities are become fenced, and are inhabited.
  36. 36 Then the heathen that are left round about you shall know that I the LORD build the ruined places, and plant that that was desolate: I the LORD have spoken it, and I will do it.
  37. 37 Thus saith the Lord GOD; I will yet for this be enquired of by the house of Israel, to do it for them; I will increase them with men like a flock.
  38. 38 As the holy flock, as the flock of Jerusalem in her solemn feasts; so shall the waste cities be filled with flocks of men: and they shall know that I am the LORD.

  1. 1 "And you, son of man, prophesy to the mountains of Israel, and say, 'O mountains of Israel, hear the word of the LORD!
  2. 2 Thus says the Lord GOD: "Because the enemy has said of you, 'Aha! The ancient heights have become our possession,' " '

  4. 4 therefore, O mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord GOD! Thus says the Lord GOD to the mountains, the hills, the rivers, the valleys, the desolate wastes, and the cities that have been forsaken, which became plunder and mockery to the rest of the nations all around?
  5. 5 therefore thus says the Lord GOD: "Surely I have spoken in My burning jealousy against the rest of the nations and against all Edom, who gave My land to themselves as a possession, with wholehearted joy and spiteful minds, in order to plunder its open country." '
  6. 6 "Therefore prophesy concerning the land of Israel, and say to the mountains, the hills, the rivers, and the valleys, 'Thus says the Lord GOD: "Behold, I have spoken in My jealousy and My fury, because you have borne the shame of the nations."
  7. 7 Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: "I have raised My hand in an oath that surely the nations that are around you shall bear their own shame.
  8. 8 But you, O mountains of Israel, you shall shoot forth your branches and yield your fruit to My people Israel, for they are about to come.
  9. 9 For indeed I am for you, and I will turn to you, and you shall be tilled and sown.
  10. 10 I will multiply men upon you, all the house of Israel, all of it; and the cities shall be inhabited and the ruins rebuilt.
  11. 11 I will multiply upon you man and beast; and they shall increase and bear young; I will make you inhabited as in former times, and do better for you than at your beginnings. Then you shall know that I am the LORD.
  12. 12 Yes, I will cause men to walk on you, My people Israel; they shall take possession of you, and you shall be their inheritance; no more shall you bereave them of children."
  13. 13 'Thus says the Lord GOD: "Because they say to you, 'You devour men and bereave your nation of children,'
  14. 14 therefore you shall devour men no more, nor bereave your nation anymore," says the Lord GOD.
  15. 15 "Nor will I let you hear the taunts of the nations anymore, nor bear the reproach of the peoples anymore, nor shall you cause your nation to stumble anymore," says the Lord GOD.' "
  16. 16 Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying:
  17. 17 "Son of man, when the house of Israel dwelt in their own land, they defiled it by their own ways and deeds; to Me their way was like the uncleanness of a woman in her customary impurity.
  18. 18 Therefore I poured out My fury on them for the blood they had shed on the land, and for their idols with which they had defiled it.
  19. 19 So I scattered them among the nations, and they were dispersed throughout the countries; I judged them according to their ways and their deeds.
  20. 20 When they came to the nations, wherever they went, they profaned My holy name?when they said of them, 'These are the people of the LORD, and yet they have gone out of His land.'
  21. 21 But I had concern for My holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the nations wherever they went.
  22. 22 "Therefore say to the house of Israel, 'Thus says the Lord GOD: "I do not do this for your sake, O house of Israel, but for My holy name's sake, which you have profaned among the nations wherever you went.
  23. 23 And I will sanctify My great name, which has been profaned among the nations, which you have profaned in their midst; and the nations shall know that I am the LORD," says the Lord GOD, "when I am hallowed in you before their eyes.
  24. 24 For I will take you from among the nations, gather you out of all countries, and bring you into your own land.
  25. 25 Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols.
  26. 26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.
  27. 27 I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them.
  28. 28 Then you shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; you shall be My people, and I will be your God.
  29. 29 I will deliver you from all your uncleannesses. I will call for the grain and multiply it, and bring no famine upon you.
  30. 30 And I will multiply the fruit of your trees and the increase of your fields, so that you need never again bear the reproach of famine among the nations.
  31. 31 Then you will remember your evil ways and your deeds that were not good; and you will loathe yourselves in your own sight, for your iniquities and your abominations.
  32. 32 Not for your sake do I do this," says the Lord GOD, "let it be known to you. Be ashamed and confounded for your own ways, O house of Israel!"
  33. 33 'Thus says the Lord GOD: "On the day that I cleanse you from all your iniquities, I will also enable you to dwell in the cities, and the ruins shall be rebuilt.
  34. 34 The desolate land shall be tilled instead of lying desolate in the sight of all who pass by.
  35. 35 So they will say, 'This land that was desolate has become like the garden of Eden; and the wasted, desolate, and ruined cities are now fortified and inhabited.'
  36. 36 Then the nations which are left all around you shall know that I, the LORD, have rebuilt the ruined places and planted what was desolate. I, the LORD, have spoken it, and I will do it."
  37. 37 'Thus says the Lord GOD: "I will also let the house of Israel inquire of Me to do this for them: I will increase their men like a flock.
  38. 38 Like a flock offered as holy sacrifices, like the flock at Jerusalem on its feast days, so shall the ruined cities be filled with flocks of men. Then they shall know that I am the LORD." ' "

Ezekiel chapter 36 niv

  1. 1 "Son of man, prophesy to the mountains of Israel and say, 'Mountains of Israel, hear the word of the LORD.
  2. 2 This is what the Sovereign LORD says: The enemy said of you, "Aha! The ancient heights have become our possession."?'
  3. 3 Therefore prophesy and say, 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Because they ravaged and crushed you from every side so that you became the possession of the rest of the nations and the object of people's malicious talk and slander,
  4. 4 therefore, mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Sovereign LORD: This is what the Sovereign LORD says to the mountains and hills, to the ravines and valleys, to the desolate ruins and the deserted towns that have been plundered and ridiculed by the rest of the nations around you?
  5. 5 this is what the Sovereign LORD says: In my burning zeal I have spoken against the rest of the nations, and against all Edom, for with glee and with malice in their hearts they made my land their own possession so that they might plunder its pastureland.'
  6. 6 Therefore prophesy concerning the land of Israel and say to the mountains and hills, to the ravines and valleys: 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: I speak in my jealous wrath because you have suffered the scorn of the nations.
  7. 7 Therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says: I swear with uplifted hand that the nations around you will also suffer scorn.
  8. 8 "?'But you, mountains of Israel, will produce branches and fruit for my people Israel, for they will soon come home.
  9. 9 I am concerned for you and will look on you with favor; you will be plowed and sown,
  10. 10 and I will cause many people to live on you?yes, all of Israel. The towns will be inhabited and the ruins rebuilt.
  11. 11 I will increase the number of people and animals living on you, and they will be fruitful and become numerous. I will settle people on you as in the past and will make you prosper more than before. Then you will know that I am the LORD.
  12. 12 I will cause people, my people Israel, to live on you. They will possess you, and you will be their inheritance; you will never again deprive them of their children.
  13. 13 "?'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Because some say to you, "You devour people and deprive your nation of its children,"
  14. 14 therefore you will no longer devour people or make your nation childless, declares the Sovereign LORD.
  15. 15 No longer will I make you hear the taunts of the nations, and no longer will you suffer the scorn of the peoples or cause your nation to fall, declares the Sovereign LORD.'?"
  16. 16 Again the word of the LORD came to me:
  17. 17 "Son of man, when the people of Israel were living in their own land, they defiled it by their conduct and their actions. Their conduct was like a woman's monthly uncleanness in my sight.
  18. 18 So I poured out my wrath on them because they had shed blood in the land and because they had defiled it with their idols.
  19. 19 I dispersed them among the nations, and they were scattered through the countries; I judged them according to their conduct and their actions.
  20. 20 And wherever they went among the nations they profaned my holy name, for it was said of them, 'These are the LORD's people, and yet they had to leave his land.'
  21. 21 I had concern for my holy name, which the people of Israel profaned among the nations where they had gone.
  22. 22 "Therefore say to the Israelites, 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: It is not for your sake, people of Israel, that I am going to do these things, but for the sake of my holy name, which you have profaned among the nations where you have gone.
  23. 23 I will show the holiness of my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, the name you have profaned among them. Then the nations will know that I am the LORD, declares the Sovereign LORD, when I am proved holy through you before their eyes.
  24. 24 "?'For I will take you out of the nations; I will gather you from all the countries and bring you back into your own land.
  25. 25 I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols.
  26. 26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.
  27. 27 And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.
  28. 28 Then you will live in the land I gave your ancestors; you will be my people, and I will be your God.
  29. 29 I will save you from all your uncleanness. I will call for the grain and make it plentiful and will not bring famine upon you.
  30. 30 I will increase the fruit of the trees and the crops of the field, so that you will no longer suffer disgrace among the nations because of famine.
  31. 31 Then you will remember your evil ways and wicked deeds, and you will loathe yourselves for your sins and detestable practices.
  32. 32 I want you to know that I am not doing this for your sake, declares the Sovereign LORD. Be ashamed and disgraced for your conduct, people of Israel!
  33. 33 "?'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: On the day I cleanse you from all your sins, I will resettle your towns, and the ruins will be rebuilt.
  34. 34 The desolate land will be cultivated instead of lying desolate in the sight of all who pass through it.
  35. 35 They will say, "This land that was laid waste has become like the garden of Eden; the cities that were lying in ruins, desolate and destroyed, are now fortified and inhabited."
  36. 36 Then the nations around you that remain will know that I the LORD have rebuilt what was destroyed and have replanted what was desolate. I the LORD have spoken, and I will do it.'
  37. 37 "This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Once again I will yield to Israel's plea and do this for them: I will make their people as numerous as sheep,
  38. 38 as numerous as the flocks for offerings at Jerusalem during her appointed festivals. So will the ruined cities be filled with flocks of people. Then they will know that I am the LORD."

Ezekiel chapter 36 esv

  1. 1 "And you, son of man, prophesy to the mountains of Israel, and say, O mountains of Israel, hear the word of the LORD.
  2. 2 Thus says the Lord GOD: Because the enemy said of you, 'Aha!' and, 'The ancient heights have become our possession,'
  3. 3 therefore prophesy, and say, Thus says the Lord GOD: Precisely because they made you desolate and crushed you from all sides, so that you became the possession of the rest of the nations, and you became the talk and evil gossip of the people,
  4. 4 therefore, O mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord GOD: Thus says the Lord GOD to the mountains and the hills, the ravines and the valleys, the desolate wastes and the deserted cities, which have become a prey and derision to the rest of the nations all around,
  5. 5 therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Surely I have spoken in my hot jealousy against the rest of the nations and against all Edom, who gave my land to themselves as a possession with wholehearted joy and utter contempt, that they might make its pasturelands a prey.
  6. 6 Therefore prophesy concerning the land of Israel, and say to the mountains and hills, to the ravines and valleys, Thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I have spoken in my jealous wrath, because you have suffered the reproach of the nations.
  7. 7 Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: I swear that the nations that are all around you shall themselves suffer reproach.
  8. 8 "But you, O mountains of Israel, shall shoot forth your branches and yield your fruit to my people Israel, for they will soon come home.
  9. 9 For behold, I am for you, and I will turn to you, and you shall be tilled and sown.
  10. 10 And I will multiply people on you, the whole house of Israel, all of it. The cities shall be inhabited and the waste places rebuilt.
  11. 11 And I will multiply on you man and beast, and they shall multiply and be fruitful. And I will cause you to be inhabited as in your former times, and will do more good to you than ever before. Then you will know that I am the LORD.
  12. 12 I will let people walk on you, even my people Israel. And they shall possess you, and you shall be their inheritance, and you shall no longer bereave them of children.
  13. 13 Thus says the Lord GOD: Because they say to you, 'You devour people, and you bereave your nation of children,'
  14. 14 therefore you shall no longer devour people and no longer bereave your nation of children, declares the Lord GOD.
  15. 15 And I will not let you hear anymore the reproach of the nations, and you shall no longer bear the disgrace of the peoples and no longer cause your nation to stumble, declares the Lord GOD."
  16. 16 The word of the LORD came to me:
  17. 17 "Son of man, when the house of Israel lived in their own land, they defiled it by their ways and their deeds. Their ways before me were like the uncleanness of a woman in her menstrual impurity.
  18. 18 So I poured out my wrath upon them for the blood that they had shed in the land, for the idols with which they had defiled it.
  19. 19 I scattered them among the nations, and they were dispersed through the countries. In accordance with their ways and their deeds I judged them.
  20. 20 But when they came to the nations, wherever they came, they profaned my holy name, in that people said of them, 'These are the people of the LORD, and yet they had to go out of his land.'
  21. 21 But I had concern for my holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the nations to which they came.
  22. 22 "Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord GOD: It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for the sake of my holy name, which you have profaned among the nations to which you came.
  23. 23 And I will vindicate the holiness of my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, and which you have profaned among them. And the nations will know that I am the LORD, declares the Lord GOD, when through you I vindicate my holiness before their eyes.
  24. 24 I will take you from the nations and gather you from all the countries and bring you into your own land.
  25. 25 I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you.
  26. 26 And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.
  27. 27 And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.
  28. 28 You shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers, and you shall be my people, and I will be your God.
  29. 29 And I will deliver you from all your uncleannesses. And I will summon the grain and make it abundant and lay no famine upon you.
  30. 30 I will make the fruit of the tree and the increase of the field abundant, that you may never again suffer the disgrace of famine among the nations.
  31. 31 Then you will remember your evil ways, and your deeds that were not good, and you will loathe yourselves for your iniquities and your abominations.
  32. 32 It is not for your sake that I will act, declares the Lord GOD; let that be known to you. Be ashamed and confounded for your ways, O house of Israel.
  33. 33 "Thus says the Lord GOD: On the day that I cleanse you from all your iniquities, I will cause the cities to be inhabited, and the waste places shall be rebuilt.
  34. 34 And the land that was desolate shall be tilled, instead of being the desolation that it was in the sight of all who passed by.
  35. 35 And they will say, 'This land that was desolate has become like the garden of Eden, and the waste and desolate and ruined cities are now fortified and inhabited.'
  36. 36 Then the nations that are left all around you shall know that I am the LORD; I have rebuilt the ruined places and replanted that which was desolate. I am the LORD; I have spoken, and I will do it.
  37. 37 "Thus says the Lord GOD: This also I will let the house of Israel ask me to do for them: to increase their people like a flock.
  38. 38 Like the flock for sacrifices, like the flock at Jerusalem during her appointed feasts, so shall the waste cities be filled with flocks of people. Then they will know that I am the LORD."

Ezekiel chapter 36 nlt

  1. 1 "Son of man, prophesy to Israel's mountains. Give them this message: O mountains of Israel, hear the word of the LORD!
  2. 2 This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Your enemies have taunted you, saying, 'Aha! Now the ancient heights belong to us!'
  3. 3 Therefore, son of man, give the mountains of Israel this message from the Sovereign LORD: Your enemies have attacked you from all directions, making you the property of many nations and the object of much mocking and slander.
  4. 4 Therefore, O mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Sovereign LORD. He speaks to the hills and mountains, ravines and valleys, and to ruined wastes and long-deserted cities that have been destroyed and mocked by the surrounding nations.
  5. 5 This is what the Sovereign LORD says: My jealous anger burns against these nations, especially Edom, because they have shown utter contempt for me by gleefully taking my land for themselves as plunder.
  6. 6 "Therefore, prophesy to the hills and mountains, the ravines and valleys of Israel. This is what the Sovereign LORD says: I am furious that you have suffered shame before the surrounding nations.
  7. 7 Therefore, this is what the Sovereign LORD says: I have taken a solemn oath that those nations will soon have their own shame to endure.
  8. 8 "But the mountains of Israel will produce heavy crops of fruit for my people ? for they will be coming home again soon!
  9. 9 See, I care about you, and I will pay attention to you. Your ground will be plowed and your crops planted.
  10. 10 I will greatly increase the population of Israel, and the ruined cities will be rebuilt and filled with people.
  11. 11 I will increase not only the people, but also your animals. O mountains of Israel, I will bring people to live on you once again. I will make you even more prosperous than you were before. Then you will know that I am the LORD.
  12. 12 I will cause my people to walk on you once again, and you will be their territory. You will never again rob them of their children.
  13. 13 "This is what the Sovereign LORD says: The other nations taunt you, saying, 'Israel is a land that devours its own people and robs them of their children!'
  14. 14 But you will never again devour your people or rob them of their children, says the Sovereign LORD.
  15. 15 I will not let you hear those other nations insult you, and you will no longer be mocked by them. You will not be a land that causes its nation to fall, says the Sovereign LORD."
  16. 16 Then this further message came to me from the LORD:
  17. 17 "Son of man, when the people of Israel were living in their own land, they defiled it by the evil way they lived. To me their conduct was as unclean as a woman's menstrual cloth.
  18. 18 They polluted the land with murder and the worship of idols, so I poured out my fury on them.
  19. 19 I scattered them to many lands to punish them for the evil way they had lived.
  20. 20 But when they were scattered among the nations, they brought shame on my holy name. For the nations said, 'These are the people of the LORD, but he couldn't keep them safe in his own land!'
  21. 21 Then I was concerned for my holy name, on which my people brought shame among the nations.
  22. 22 "Therefore, give the people of Israel this message from the Sovereign LORD: I am bringing you back, but not because you deserve it. I am doing it to protect my holy name, on which you brought shame while you were scattered among the nations.
  23. 23 I will show how holy my great name is ? the name on which you brought shame among the nations. And when I reveal my holiness through you before their very eyes, says the Sovereign LORD, then the nations will know that I am the LORD.
  24. 24 For I will gather you up from all the nations and bring you home again to your land.
  25. 25 "Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean. Your filth will be washed away, and you will no longer worship idols.
  26. 26 And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart.
  27. 27 And I will put my Spirit in you so that you will follow my decrees and be careful to obey my regulations.
  28. 28 "And you will live in Israel, the land I gave your ancestors long ago. You will be my people, and I will be your God.
  29. 29 I will cleanse you of your filthy behavior. I will give you good crops of grain, and I will send no more famines on the land.
  30. 30 I will give you great harvests from your fruit trees and fields, and never again will the surrounding nations be able to scoff at your land for its famines.
  31. 31 Then you will remember your past sins and despise yourselves for all the detestable things you did.
  32. 32 But remember, says the Sovereign LORD, I am not doing this because you deserve it. O my people of Israel, you should be utterly ashamed of all you have done!
  33. 33 "This is what the Sovereign LORD says: When I cleanse you from your sins, I will repopulate your cities, and the ruins will be rebuilt.
  34. 34 The fields that used to lie empty and desolate in plain view of everyone will again be farmed.
  35. 35 And when I bring you back, people will say, 'This former wasteland is now like the Garden of Eden! The abandoned and ruined cities now have strong walls and are filled with people!'
  36. 36 Then the surrounding nations that survive will know that I, the LORD, have rebuilt the ruins and replanted the wasteland. For I, the LORD, have spoken, and I will do what I say.
  37. 37 "This is what the Sovereign LORD says: I am ready to hear Israel's prayers and to increase their numbers like a flock.
  38. 38 They will be as numerous as the sacred flocks that fill Jerusalem's streets at the time of her festivals. The ruined cities will be crowded with people once more, and everyone will know that I am the LORD."
