Ezekiel 32 meaning explained in AI Summary

Ezekiel 32 continues the prophet's pronouncements of judgment, this time focusing on Egypt's impending downfall. The chapter can be divided into two main laments:

Lament for Pharaoh and Egypt (verses 1-16):

  • Pharaoh compared to a powerful beast: Ezekiel compares Pharaoh to a terrifying sea monster (crocodile or Nile monster) who believes himself invincible (v. 2). This imagery emphasizes Egypt's arrogance and pride.
  • Egypt's fall and its impact: God declares that He will use Babylon to drag Egypt down, stripping it of its power and glory (v. 3-6). The fall of Egypt will plunge the nations into darkness and fear (v. 7-10).
  • No escape for Pharaoh and his army: God will use Nebuchadnezzar and the Babylonian army to slaughter the Egyptians, leaving them no chance of escape (v. 11-16).

Lament for Egypt and its allies (verses 17-32):

  • Egypt joins the fallen nations: Egypt will descend to the underworld (Sheol) and lie among other defeated nations, stripped of their former glory (v. 18-21).
  • Listing of defeated nations: Ezekiel lists several powerful nations like Assyria, Elam, and Meshech-Tubal, all lying slain in the underworld (v. 22-30). This emphasizes the finality and universality of God's judgment.
  • No comfort for Egypt: Even surrounded by other fallen nations, Egypt will find no comfort. Their fate is sealed, and they will face eternal shame and defeat (v. 31-32).

Overall, Ezekiel 32 serves as a stark warning against pride and self-reliance. It highlights that even the mightiest nations are not beyond God's judgment and that those who oppose His will will face inevitable downfall.

Ezekiel 32 bible study ai commentary

Ezekiel chapter 32 delivers a final, powerful lament and judgment against Pharaoh and the nation of Egypt. It uses vivid, mythological imagery to portray the complete and humiliating downfall of a world power that saw itself as divine. The prophecy unfolds in two parts: the first depicts Pharaoh as a chaotic sea monster, captured and disgracefully disposed of, causing cosmic-level disruption. The second oracle describes Egypt's descent into Sheol (the realm of the dead), where it finds a bleak "comfort" in joining the company of other great empires already defeated and shamed, thereby affirming God's ultimate sovereignty over all nations and even death itself.

Ezekiel 32 Context

This chapter contains two distinct oracles. The first is dated to the twelfth year of the exile (c. 586/585 BC), likely around the time of the final fall of Jerusalem. Pharaoh Hophra (Apries) had been an ally to Judah, but his intervention against Babylon failed, sealing Judah's fate. This oracle announces the consequences for his pride and failure. The context is one of divine judgment against a pagan king who viewed himself as a god and the creator of his own domain, the Nile. The imagery directly challenges Egyptian cosmology, where Pharaoh was the guarantor of cosmic order (Ma'at), and the sun-god Ra was supreme. Ezekiel subverts this, portraying Pharaoh as a source of chaos and Yahweh as the one who controls the cosmos.

Ezekiel 32:1-2

In the twelfth year, in the twelfth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me: "Son of man, take up a lamentation for Pharaoh king of Egypt and say to him: 'You are like a young lion among the nations, but you are like a sea monster in the seas; you burst forth in your rivers, trouble the waters with your feet, and foul their streams.'"

In-depth-analysis

  • Lamentation (Heb. qinah): This is a funeral dirge. God commands Ezekiel to mourn Pharaoh before he is even dead, signifying the certainty of his demise.
  • Young Lion (kefir): Pharaoh's self-perception. Lions were symbols of royalty and power in the ancient Near East. This is how Egypt projected its strength.
  • Sea Monster (tannin): God's true assessment of Pharaoh. This word can mean crocodile, dragon, or a mythological sea serpent. It is associated with chaos and primal forces that God alone can conquer. The image is deeply polemical, turning the life-giving Nile into a scene of chaos caused by its supposed divine guardian. Instead of upholding order (Ma'at), he fouls his own domain.
  • Trouble the Waters: Pharaoh's political machinations and military actions are not seen as displays of strength but as destructive disturbances that pollute the international scene.

Bible references

  • Ps 74:13-14: "You divided the sea by your might; you broke the heads of the sea monsters (tanninim) ... you crushed the heads of Leviathan..." (God's primordial victory over chaos monsters).
  • Isa 27:1: "In that day the LORD ... will punish Leviathan the fleeing serpent ... and he will slay the dragon that is in the sea." (An eschatological prophecy of God defeating the ultimate chaotic foe).
  • Ezek 29:3: "...the great dragon that lies in the midst of his streams, that says, ‘My Nile is my own; I made it for myself.’” (A direct parallel to this chapter's imagery and charge of pride).

Cross references

Job 41 (describes Leviathan's might); Ps 104:26 (Leviathan in the sea); Nah 2:11-13 (Nineveh as a lion's den); Rev 12:3-9 (the great red dragon).

Ezekiel 32:3-6

"Thus says the Lord GOD: 'I will throw my net over you with a host of many peoples, and they will haul you up in my dragnet. And I will cast you on the land; I will hurl you on the open field; and I will cause all the birds of the heavens to settle on you, and I will gorge the beasts of the whole earth with you... and the land will be drenched with your blood.'"

In-depth-analysis

  • My Net: This is God's primary tool for capturing proud rulers. The "host of many peoples" refers to the Babylonian army, but God claims it as His own instrument. Pharaoh, the great hunter, is now the hunted prey.
  • Cast You on the Land: A crocodile or sea creature is helpless on dry land. This image signifies total loss of power and displacement from one's element.
  • Birds ... and Beasts: A dishonorable end. Instead of a royal burial, Pharaoh’s corpse becomes carrion. This is a common ancient Near Eastern curse and reverses the created order where man has dominion over animals.
  • Drenched with Blood: Hyperbolic language emphasizing the totality of the slaughter and destruction that will cover the land.

Bible references

  • Ezek 12:13: "I will spread my net for him, and he shall be taken in my snare..." (God catching King Zedekiah of Judah).
  • Hab 1:14-15: "You make mankind like the fish of the sea... He brings all of them up with a hook; he drags them out with his net..." (Describes the Chaldeans' (Babylonians') unstoppable conquest).
  • Rev 19:17-18: "Then I saw an angel... crying with a loud voice to all the birds that fly directly overhead, 'Come, gather for the great supper of God, to eat the flesh of kings...'" (Fulfills this type of judgment imagery in the final battle).

Cross references

Ezek 17:20 (God's net); Hos 7:12 (God's net); Deut 28:26 (curse of being food for birds); 1 Sam 17:44 (Goliath's threat to David).

Ezekiel 32:7-8

"'When I blot you out, I will cover the heavens and make their stars dark; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall not give its light. All the bright lights of heaven I will make dark over you, and bring darkness upon your land, declares the Lord GOD.'"

In-depth-analysis

  • Cosmic De-creation: The fall of a single pagan king is portrayed as an event of cosmic significance. The darkening of the heavenly bodies is standard prophetic language for the "Day of the Lord," a time of immense judgment.
  • Polemics: This is a direct attack on Egyptian religion. The chief deity was the sun god Ra. God declares He will "cover the sun," demonstrating His superiority. Pharaoh's fall means the end of light and order for Egypt. The darkness is both literal (perhaps through dust storms from battle) and metaphorical for the end of Egypt's glory and divine favor.

Bible references

  • Isa 13:10: "For the stars of the heavens and their constellations will not give their light; the sun will be dark at its rising, and the moon will not shed its light." (Describing the judgment on Babylon).
  • Joel 2:31: "The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and awesome day of the LORD comes." (Classic Day of the Lord imagery).
  • Matt 24:29: "Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light..." (Jesus uses this same imagery to describe the judgment accompanying His return).

Cross references

Exod 10:21-23 (the plague of darkness on Egypt); Amos 8:9 (God making the sun go down at noon); Rev 6:12 (the sixth seal opens with the sun turning black).

Ezekiel 32:9-16

"...I will trouble the hearts of many peoples, when I bring your destruction among the nations... they will be utterly appalled at you... their kings will shudder with horror... They will tremble every moment... And I will make the waters of Egypt deep and their rivers run like oil, declares the Lord GOD. When I make the land of Egypt a desolation... they will know that I am the LORD. This is a lamentation that shall be chanted..."

In-depth-analysis

  • Trouble the Hearts: Egypt’s fall will serve as a terrifying lesson to other nations, shattering their sense of security.
  • Rivers Run Like Oil: After the violent turmoil ("fouling the streams"), the waters will become slow-moving and "like oil." This is not a blessing. It signifies stagnation, silence, and death. The vibrant, life-giving Nile ceases to be a commercial and military highway and becomes a symbol of a dead nation.
  • They Will Know: The ultimate purpose of this devastating judgment is the revelation of Yahweh's sovereignty over all human empires and their gods.
  • Lamentation to be Chanted: The prophecy ends as it began, underscoring that this dirge is a divine decree that will come to pass and be remembered.

Bible references

  • Isa 14:16: "Those who see you [King of Babylon] will stare at you and ponder over you: ‘Is this the man who made the earth tremble...?’" (Nations marveling at a fallen tyrant).
  • Exod 15:14-16: "The peoples have heard; they tremble... terror and dread fall upon them..." (The reaction of nations to God's victory at the Red Sea).

Cross references

Ezek 27:35-36 (reaction to Tyre's fall); Ezek 31:16 (trees of Eden trembling at Assyria's fall); Rev 18:9-10 (kings weeping over the fall of Babylon the Great).

Ezekiel 32:17-21

In the twelfth year, on the fifteenth day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me... "Son of man, wail over the multitude of Egypt, and send them down, her and the daughters of majestic nations, to the world below, to those who have gone down to the pit... ‘Are you more beautiful than any other? Go down and be laid to rest with the uncircumcised.’... The mighty chiefs shall speak of them, with their helpers, out of the midst of Sheol: ‘They have come down, they lie still, the uncircumcised, slain by the sword.’"

In-depth-analysis

  • Second Oracle: Dated just two weeks after the first, this oracle elaborates on Egypt's final destination.
  • The Pit / Sheol: Hebrew sheol, the realm of the dead. It is portrayed here as a great subterranean chamber where the ghosts or shades of the dead reside in a weak, silent state.
  • Uncircumcised (Heb. arelim): This is the ultimate insult. While some Egyptians practiced a form of circumcision, in the Hebrew context, being uncircumcised meant being outside the covenant people, an outcast. To be buried with them was a mark of supreme dishonor, especially for a nation as proud of its culture as Egypt.
  • Mighty Chiefs Shall Speak: Even the great warriors of past empires, already in Sheol, will mockingly greet Pharaoh, acknowledging his arrival among the defeated.

Bible references

  • Isa 14:9-11: "Sheol below is stirred up to meet you at your coming; it rouses the shades to greet you, all who were leaders of the earth... and they will say to you: ‘You also have become weak as we are... your pomp is brought down to Sheol...’” (A powerful parallel describing the King of Babylon's welcome to Sheol).
  • Ps 88:4-6: "I am counted among those who go down to the pit... like the slain that lie in the grave... you have put me in the depths of the pit, in the regions dark and deep." (A personal lament using the same imagery of the pit/grave).

Cross references

Gen 34:14 (uncircumcised as a reproach); 1 Sam 31:4 (Saul's fear of dying by the uncircumcised); Num 16:30-33 (the earth swallowing Korah into Sheol).

Ezekiel 32:22-30

“Assyria is there, and all her company... their graves are set in the uttermost parts of the pit... all of them slain, fallen by the sword. Elam is there... Meshech-Tubal is there... they have gone down uncircumcised, slain by the sword... though they were a terror to the living. And they do not lie with the mighty, the fallen from of old... But Edom is there, her kings and all her princes... The princes of the north are there, all of them, and all the Sidonians, who have gone down in shame with the slain..."

In-depth-analysis

  • A Tour of Sheol: Ezekiel now gives a roll call of great nations and warriors already in the dishonored section of the underworld. Each receives a similar epitaph: they once caused terror on earth, but now they are weak, shamed, and lie among the slain.
  • Assyria: The former brutal empire that destroyed the northern kingdom of Israel.
  • Elam: A powerful eastern neighbor, long a rival of Mesopotamian powers.
  • Meshech-Tubal: Anatolian peoples (modern-day Turkey) known for their fierce warrior culture. Ezekiel notes they were denied an honorable burial even by pagan standards, lying apart from the ancient legendary heroes.
  • Edom: Judah’s sibling-nation, judged for its long-standing animosity.
  • Princes of the North / Sidonians: Represents the powerful Phoenician city-states and their neighbors.
  • Uttermost parts of the pit: This suggests degrees of dishonor in Sheol. The proudest and most wicked nations are consigned to the lowest, most remote sections.

Bible references

  • Nah 3:18-19: "Your shepherds are asleep, O king of Assyria... Your injury is incurable... For over whom has not your evil passed continually?" (A prophecy of Assyria's complete end).
  • Obad 1:3-4: "The pride of your heart has deceived you... Though you soar aloft like the eagle... from there I will bring you down, declares the LORD.” (A direct parallel to the judgment on Edom).

Cross references

Jer 49:34-39 (prophecy against Elam); Ezek 38-39 (Meshech-Tubal as part of the future Gog/Magog invasion); Isa 23 (prophecy against Tyre/Sidon).

Ezekiel 32:31-32

"Pharaoh will see them and be comforted for all his multitude, Pharaoh and all his army, slain by the sword, declares the Lord GOD. For I spread my terror in the land of the living, and he shall be laid to rest among the uncircumcised, with those who are slain by the sword, Pharaoh and all his multitude, declares the Lord GOD.”

In-depth-analysis

  • Comforted: This is a deeply ironic comfort. Pharaoh’s only solace in the underworld is schadenfreude—seeing that all the other "great" and "terrible" nations have met the same ignominious fate. His pride is comforted not by his own survival, but by the shared ruin of his peers. It is the comfort of misery loving company.
  • I Spread My Terror: The final verse makes a crucial point. While Meshech-Tubal and others spread their terror in the land of the living, God declares that He spread "My terror" through Pharaoh. Pharaoh thought the terror he caused was his own power, but God reveals it was only His permissive will. In the end, Yahweh is the sovereign over life, death, terror, and history.

Bible references

  • Eccl 9:5-6: "For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing... their love and their hate and their envy have already perished..." (The Old Testament view of the powerless state of the dead in Sheol).
  • Luke 16:25: "But Abraham said, 'Child, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish.'" (Contrasts the ironic, bleak comfort of Sheol with true comfort in God's presence).

Cross references

Job 3:13-19 (Job longs for the grave where kings and servants are equal and at rest); Ps 49:16-20 (the wealthy cannot take their pomp with them to the grave).

Ezekiel Chapter 32 Analysis

  • The Sovereignty of God: The overriding theme is God's absolute power over world empires. He raises them up and He casts them down. Egypt’s pride, centered on Pharaoh's self-deification, is met with total humiliation, demonstrating that Yahweh alone is God.
  • Polemic as Prophecy: The chapter is a masterpiece of anti-Egyptian polemic. Every core tenet of their worldview is inverted: Pharaoh, the guarantor of order, becomes a chaos monster. The sun god Ra is blacked out. The life-giving Nile becomes a stagnant cesspool. The Egyptian obsession with proper burial is undone by a prophecy of being unburied carrion and then laid in a dishonorable mass grave.
  • Sheol and the Afterlife: Ezekiel 32 provides one of the most detailed Old Testament descriptions of Sheol. It is not hell in the New Testament sense of fiery torment, but a dreary, shadowy realm of weakness and memory. However, it's clear there are "levels" of honor and dishonor, and the "uncircumcised, slain by the sword" occupy a place of shame reserved for the godless and violent enemies of God's people.
  • The Great Equalizer: The tour of the underworld in vv. 17-32 acts as a great equalizer. Assyria, Elam, Edom, Sidon—all the titans of the ancient world are reduced to feeble shades. Their earthly power, their armies, and their terror mean nothing in the face of God's judgment. Pharaoh is not unique; he is just the next in a long line of the fallen proud.

Ezekiel 32 Summary

God instructs Ezekiel to deliver a funeral lament for the proud Pharaoh of Egypt, portraying him as a chaotic sea monster whom God will violently capture, kill, and leave unburied. This downfall is so significant it is accompanied by cosmic darkness. A second oracle details Egypt’s descent into Sheol (the pit), where Pharaoh finds bleak comfort in joining a gallery of other fallen world powers (Assyria, Elam, etc.), all of whom now lie in weakness and dishonor, demonstrating Yahweh’s supreme authority over all nations and even over the realm of death.

  1. 1 And it came to pass in the twelfth year, in the twelfth month, in the first day of the month, that the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
  2. 2 Son of man, take up a lamentation for Pharaoh king of Egypt, and say unto him, Thou art like a young lion of the nations, and thou art as a whale in the seas: and thou camest forth with thy rivers, and troubledst the waters with thy feet, and fouledst their rivers.
  3. 3 Thus saith the Lord GOD; I will therefore spread out my net over thee with a company of many people; and they shall bring thee up in my net.
  4. 4 Then will I leave thee upon the land, I will cast thee forth upon the open field, and will cause all the fowls of the heaven to remain upon thee, and I will fill the beasts of the whole earth with thee.
  5. 5 And I will lay thy flesh upon the mountains, and fill the valleys with thy height.
  6. 6 I will also water with thy blood the land wherein thou swimmest, even to the mountains; and the rivers shall be full of thee.
  7. 7 And when I shall put thee out, I will cover the heaven, and make the stars thereof dark; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall not give her light.
  8. 8 All the bright lights of heaven will I make dark over thee, and set darkness upon thy land, saith the Lord GOD.
  9. 9 I will also vex the hearts of many people, when I shall bring thy destruction among the nations, into the countries which thou hast not known.
  10. 10 Yea, I will make many people amazed at thee, and their kings shall be horribly afraid for thee, when I shall brandish my sword before them; and they shall tremble at every moment, every man for his own life, in the day of thy fall.
  11. 11 For thus saith the Lord GOD; The sword of the king of Babylon shall come upon thee.
  12. 12 By the swords of the mighty will I cause thy multitude to fall, the terrible of the nations, all of them: and they shall spoil the pomp of Egypt, and all the multitude thereof shall be destroyed.
  13. 13 I will destroy also all the beasts thereof from beside the great waters; neither shall the foot of man trouble them any more, nor the hoofs of beasts trouble them.
  14. 14 Then will I make their waters deep, and cause their rivers to run like oil, saith the Lord GOD.
  15. 15 When I shall make the land of Egypt desolate, and the country shall be destitute of that whereof it was full, when I shall smite all them that dwell therein, then shall they know that I am the LORD.
  16. 16 This is the lamentation wherewith they shall lament her: the daughters of the nations shall lament her: they shall lament for her, even for Egypt, and for all her multitude, saith the Lord GOD.
  17. 17 It came to pass also in the twelfth year, in the fifteenth day of the month, that the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
  18. 18 Son of man, wail for the multitude of Egypt, and cast them down, even her, and the daughters of the famous nations, unto the nether parts of the earth, with them that go down into the pit.
  19. 19 Whom dost thou pass in beauty? go down, and be thou laid with the uncircumcised.
  20. 20 They shall fall in the midst of them that are slain by the sword: she is delivered to the sword: draw her and all her multitudes.
  21. 21 The strong among the mighty shall speak to him out of the midst of hell with them that help him: they are gone down, they lie uncircumcised, slain by the sword.
  22. 22 Asshur is there and all her company: his graves are about him: all of them slain, fallen by the sword:
  23. 23 Whose graves are set in the sides of the pit, and her company is round about her grave: all of them slain, fallen by the sword, which caused terror in the land of the living.
  24. 24 There is Elam and all her multitude round about her grave, all of them slain, fallen by the sword, which are gone down uncircumcised into the nether parts of the earth, which caused their terror in the land of the living; yet have they borne their shame with them that go down to the pit.
  25. 25 They have set her a bed in the midst of the slain with all her multitude: her graves are round about him: all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword: though their terror was caused in the land of the living, yet have they borne their shame with them that go down to the pit: he is put in the midst of them that be slain.
  26. 26 There is Meshech, Tubal, and all her multitude: her graves are round about him: all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword, though they caused their terror in the land of the living.
  27. 27 And they shall not lie with the mighty that are fallen of the uncircumcised, which are gone down to hell with their weapons of war: and they have laid their swords under their heads, but their iniquities shall be upon their bones, though they were the terror of the mighty in the land of the living.
  28. 28 Yea, thou shalt be broken in the midst of the uncircumcised, and shalt lie with them that are slain with the sword.
  29. 29 There is Edom, her kings, and all her princes, which with their might are laid by them that were slain by the sword: they shall lie with the uncircumcised, and with them that go down to the pit.
  30. 30 There be the princes of the north, all of them, and all the Zidonians, which are gone down with the slain; with their terror they are ashamed of their might; and they lie uncircumcised with them that be slain by the sword, and bear their shame with them that go down to the pit.
  31. 31 Pharaoh shall see them, and shall be comforted over all his multitude, even Pharaoh and all his army slain by the sword, saith the Lord GOD.
  32. 32 For I have caused my terror in the land of the living: and he shall be laid in the midst of the uncircumcised with them that are slain with the sword, even Pharaoh and all his multitude, saith the Lord GOD.

  24. 24 "There is Elam and all her multitude, All around her grave, All of them slain, fallen by the sword, Who have gone down uncircumcised to the lower parts of the earth, Who caused their terror in the land of the living; Now they bear their shame with those who go down to the Pit.
  25. 25 They have set her bed in the midst of the slain, With all her multitude, With her graves all around it, All of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword; Though their terror was caused In the land of the living, Yet they bear their shame With those who go down to the Pit; It was put in the midst of the slain.
  26. 26 "There are Meshech and Tubal and all their multitudes, With all their graves around it, All of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword, Though they caused their terror in the land of the living.
  27. 27 They do not lie with the mighty Who are fallen of the uncircumcised, Who have gone down to hell with their weapons of war; They have laid their swords under their heads, But their iniquities will be on their bones, Because of the terror of the mighty in the land of the living.
  28. 28 Yes, you shall be broken in the midst of the uncircumcised, And lie with those slain by the sword.
  29. 29 "There is Edom, Her kings and all her princes, Who despite their might Are laid beside those slain by the sword; They shall lie with the uncircumcised, And with those who go down to the Pit.
  30. 30 There are the princes of the north, All of them, and all the Sidonians, Who have gone down with the slain In shame at the terror which they caused by their might; They lie uncircumcised with those slain by the sword, And bear their shame with those who go down to the Pit.
  31. 31 "Pharaoh will see them And be comforted over all his multitude, Pharaoh and all his army, Slain by the sword," Says the Lord GOD.

Ezekiel chapter 32 niv

  1. 1 In the twelfth year, in the twelfth month on the first day, the word of the LORD came to me:
  2. 2 "Son of man, take up a lament concerning Pharaoh king of Egypt and say to him: "?'You are like a lion among the nations; you are like a monster in the seas thrashing about in your streams, churning the water with your feet and muddying the streams.
  3. 3 "?'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: "?'With a great throng of people I will cast my net over you, and they will haul you up in my net.
  4. 4 I will throw you on the land and hurl you on the open field. I will let all the birds of the sky settle on you and all the animals of the wild gorge themselves on you.
  5. 5 I will spread your flesh on the mountains and fill the valleys with your remains.
  6. 6 I will drench the land with your flowing blood all the way to the mountains, and the ravines will be filled with your flesh.
  7. 7 When I snuff you out, I will cover the heavens and darken their stars; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon will not give its light.
  8. 8 All the shining lights in the heavens I will darken over you; I will bring darkness over your land, declares the Sovereign LORD.
  9. 9 I will trouble the hearts of many peoples when I bring about your destruction among the nations, among lands you have not known.
  10. 10 I will cause many peoples to be appalled at you, and their kings will shudder with horror because of you when I brandish my sword before them. On the day of your downfall each of them will tremble every moment for his life.
  11. 11 "?'For this is what the Sovereign LORD says: "?'The sword of the king of Babylon will come against you.
  12. 12 I will cause your hordes to fall by the swords of mighty men? the most ruthless of all nations. They will shatter the pride of Egypt, and all her hordes will be overthrown.
  13. 13 I will destroy all her cattle from beside abundant waters no longer to be stirred by the foot of man or muddied by the hooves of cattle.
  14. 14 Then I will let her waters settle and make her streams flow like oil, declares the Sovereign LORD.
  15. 15 When I make Egypt desolate and strip the land of everything in it, when I strike down all who live there, then they will know that I am the LORD.'
  16. 16 "This is the lament they will chant for her. The daughters of the nations will chant it; for Egypt and all her hordes they will chant it, declares the Sovereign LORD."
  17. 17 In the twelfth year, on the fifteenth day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me:
  18. 18 "Son of man, wail for the hordes of Egypt and consign to the earth below both her and the daughters of mighty nations, along with those who go down to the pit.
  19. 19 Say to them, 'Are you more favored than others? Go down and be laid among the uncircumcised.'
  20. 20 They will fall among those killed by the sword. The sword is drawn; let her be dragged off with all her hordes.
  21. 21 From within the realm of the dead the mighty leaders will say of Egypt and her allies, 'They have come down and they lie with the uncircumcised, with those killed by the sword.'
  22. 22 "Assyria is there with her whole army; she is surrounded by the graves of all her slain, all who have fallen by the sword.
  23. 23 Their graves are in the depths of the pit and her army lies around her grave. All who had spread terror in the land of the living are slain, fallen by the sword.
  24. 24 "Elam is there, with all her hordes around her grave. All of them are slain, fallen by the sword. All who had spread terror in the land of the living went down uncircumcised to the earth below. They bear their shame with those who go down to the pit.
  25. 25 A bed is made for her among the slain, with all her hordes around her grave. All of them are uncircumcised, killed by the sword. Because their terror had spread in the land of the living, they bear their shame with those who go down to the pit; they are laid among the slain.
  26. 26 "Meshek and Tubal are there, with all their hordes around their graves. All of them are uncircumcised, killed by the sword because they spread their terror in the land of the living.
  27. 27 But they do not lie with the fallen warriors of old, who went down to the realm of the dead with their weapons of war?their swords placed under their heads and their shields resting on their bones?though these warriors also had terrorized the land of the living.
  28. 28 "You too, Pharaoh, will be broken and will lie among the uncircumcised, with those killed by the sword.
  29. 29 "Edom is there, her kings and all her princes; despite their power, they are laid with those killed by the sword. They lie with the uncircumcised, with those who go down to the pit.
  30. 30 "All the princes of the north and all the Sidonians are there; they went down with the slain in disgrace despite the terror caused by their power. They lie uncircumcised with those killed by the sword and bear their shame with those who go down to the pit.
  31. 31 "Pharaoh?he and all his army?will see them and he will be consoled for all his hordes that were killed by the sword, declares the Sovereign LORD.
  32. 32 Although I had him spread terror in the land of the living, Pharaoh and all his hordes will be laid among the uncircumcised, with those killed by the sword, declares the Sovereign LORD."

Ezekiel chapter 32 esv

  1. 1 In the twelfth year, in the twelfth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me:
  2. 2 "Son of man, raise a lamentation over Pharaoh king of Egypt and say to him: "You consider yourself a lion of the nations, but you are like a dragon in the seas; you burst forth in your rivers, trouble the waters with your feet, and foul their rivers.
  3. 3 Thus says the Lord GOD: I will throw my net over you with a host of many peoples, and they will haul you up in my dragnet.
  4. 4 And I will cast you on the ground; on the open field I will fling you, and will cause all the birds of the heavens to settle on you, and I will gorge the beasts of the whole earth with you.
  5. 5 I will strew your flesh upon the mountains and fill the valleys with your carcass.
  6. 6 I will drench the land even to the mountains with your flowing blood, and the ravines will be full of you.
  7. 7 When I blot you out, I will cover the heavens and make their stars dark; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall not give its light.
  8. 8 All the bright lights of heaven will I make dark over you, and put darkness on your land, declares the Lord GOD.
  9. 9 "I will trouble the hearts of many peoples, when I bring your destruction among the nations, into the countries that you have not known.
  10. 10 I will make many peoples appalled at you, and the hair of their kings shall bristle with horror because of you, when I brandish my sword before them. They shall tremble every moment, every one for his own life, on the day of your downfall.
  11. 11 "For thus says the Lord GOD: The sword of the king of Babylon shall come upon you.
  12. 12 I will cause your multitude to fall by the swords of mighty ones, all of them most ruthless of nations. "They shall bring to ruin the pride of Egypt, and all its multitude shall perish.
  13. 13 I will destroy all its beasts from beside many waters; and no foot of man shall trouble them anymore, nor shall the hoofs of beasts trouble them.
  14. 14 Then I will make their waters clear, and cause their rivers to run like oil, declares the Lord GOD.
  15. 15 When I make the land of Egypt desolate, and when the land is desolate of all that fills it, when I strike down all who dwell in it, then they will know that I am the LORD.
  16. 16 This is a lamentation that shall be chanted; the daughters of the nations shall chant it; over Egypt, and over all her multitude, shall they chant it, declares the Lord GOD."
  17. 17 In the twelfth year, in the twelfth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me:
  18. 18 "Son of man, wail over the multitude of Egypt, and send them down, her and the daughters of majestic nations, to the world below, to those who have gone down to the pit:
  19. 19 'Whom do you surpass in beauty? Go down and be laid to rest with the uncircumcised.'
  20. 20 They shall fall amid those who are slain by the sword. Egypt is delivered to the sword; drag her away, and all her multitudes.
  21. 21 The mighty chiefs shall speak of them, with their helpers, out of the midst of Sheol: 'They have come down, they lie still, the uncircumcised, slain by the sword.'
  22. 22 "Assyria is there, and all her company, its graves all around it, all of them slain, fallen by the sword,
  23. 23 whose graves are set in the uttermost parts of the pit; and her company is all around her grave, all of them slain, fallen by the sword, who spread terror in the land of the living.
  24. 24 "Elam is there, and all her multitude around her grave; all of them slain, fallen by the sword, who went down uncircumcised into the world below, who spread their terror in the land of the living; and they bear their shame with those who go down to the pit.
  25. 25 They have made her a bed among the slain with all her multitude, her graves all around it, all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword; for terror of them was spread in the land of the living, and they bear their shame with those who go down to the pit; they are placed among the slain.
  26. 26 "Meshech-Tubal is there, and all her multitude, her graves all around it, all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword; for they spread their terror in the land of the living.
  27. 27 And they do not lie with the mighty, the fallen from among the uncircumcised, who went down to Sheol with their weapons of war, whose swords were laid under their heads, and whose iniquities are upon their bones; for the terror of the mighty men was in the land of the living.
  28. 28 But as for you, you shall be broken and lie among the uncircumcised, with those who are slain by the sword.
  29. 29 "Edom is there, her kings and all her princes, who for all their might are laid with those who are killed by the sword; they lie with the uncircumcised, with those who go down to the pit.
  30. 30 "The princes of the north are there, all of them, and all the Sidonians, who have gone down in shame with the slain, for all the terror that they caused by their might; they lie uncircumcised with those who are slain by the sword, and bear their shame with those who go down to the pit.
  31. 31 "When Pharaoh sees them, he will be comforted for all his multitude, Pharaoh and all his army, slain by the sword, declares the Lord GOD.
  32. 32 For I spread terror in the land of the living; and he shall be laid to rest among the uncircumcised, with those who are slain by the sword, Pharaoh and all his multitude, declares the Lord GOD."

Ezekiel chapter 32 nlt

  1. 1 On March 3, during the twelfth year of King Jehoiachin's captivity, this message came to me from the LORD:
  2. 2 "Son of man, mourn for Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and give him this message: "You think of yourself as a strong young lion among the nations,
but you are really just a sea monster,
heaving around in your own rivers,
stirring up mud with your feet.
  3. 3 Therefore, this is what the Sovereign LORD says:
    I will send many people
to catch you in my net
and haul you out of the water.
  4. 4 I will leave you stranded on the land to die.
All the birds of the heavens will land on you,
and the wild animals of the whole earth
    will gorge themselves on you.
  5. 5 I will scatter your flesh on the hills
and fill the valleys with your bones.
  6. 6 I will drench the earth with your gushing blood
all the way to the mountains,
filling the ravines to the brim.
  7. 7 When I blot you out,
I will veil the heavens and darken the stars.
I will cover the sun with a cloud,
and the moon will not give you its light.
  8. 8 I will darken the bright stars overhead
and cover your land in darkness.
I, the Sovereign LORD, have spoken!
  9. 9 "I will disturb many hearts when I bring news of your downfall to distant nations you have never seen.
  10. 10 Yes, I will shock many lands, and their kings will be terrified at your fate. They will shudder in fear for their lives as I brandish my sword before them on the day of your fall.
  11. 11 For this is what the Sovereign LORD says: "The sword of the king of Babylon
    will come against you.
  12. 12 I will destroy your hordes with the swords of mighty warriors ?
    the terror of the nations.
They will shatter the pride of Egypt,
and all its hordes will be destroyed.
  13. 13 I will destroy all your flocks and herds
    that graze beside the streams.
Never again will people or animals
muddy those waters with their feet.
  14. 14 Then I will let the waters of Egypt become calm again,
and they will flow as smoothly as olive oil,
    says the Sovereign LORD.
  15. 15 And when I destroy Egypt
and strip you of everything you own
and strike down all your people,
then you will know that I am the LORD.
  16. 16 Yes, this is the funeral song
    they will sing for Egypt.
    Let all the nations mourn.
Let them mourn for Egypt and its hordes.
I, the Sovereign LORD, have spoken!"
  17. 17 On March 17, during the twelfth year, another message came to me from the LORD:
  18. 18 "Son of man, weep for the hordes of Egypt and for the other mighty nations. For I will send them down to the world below in company with those who descend to the pit.
  19. 19 Say to them, 'O Egypt, are you lovelier than the other nations?
No! So go down to the pit and lie there among the outcasts. '
  20. 20 The Egyptians will fall with the many who have died by the sword, for the sword is drawn against them. Egypt and its hordes will be dragged away to their judgment.
  21. 21 Down in the grave mighty leaders will mockingly welcome Egypt and its allies, saying, 'They have come down; they lie among the outcasts, hordes slaughtered by the sword.'
  22. 22 "Assyria lies there surrounded by the graves of its army, those who were slaughtered by the sword.
  23. 23 Their graves are in the depths of the pit, and they are surrounded by their allies. They struck terror in the hearts of people everywhere, but now they have been slaughtered by the sword.
  24. 24 "Elam lies there surrounded by the graves of all its hordes, those who were slaughtered by the sword. They struck terror in the hearts of people everywhere, but now they have descended as outcasts to the world below. Now they lie in the pit and share the shame of those who have gone before them.
  25. 25 They have a resting place among the slaughtered, surrounded by the graves of all their hordes. Yes, they terrorized the nations while they lived, but now they lie in shame with others in the pit, all of them outcasts, slaughtered by the sword.
  26. 26 "Meshech and Tubal are there, surrounded by the graves of all their hordes. They once struck terror in the hearts of people everywhere. But now they are outcasts, all slaughtered by the sword.
  27. 27 They are not buried in honor like their fallen heroes, who went down to the grave with their weapons ? their shields covering their bodies and their swords beneath their heads. Their guilt rests upon them because they brought terror to everyone while they were still alive.
  28. 28 "You too, Egypt, will lie crushed and broken among the outcasts, all slaughtered by the sword.
  29. 29 "Edom is there with its kings and princes. Mighty as they were, they also lie among those slaughtered by the sword, with the outcasts who have gone down to the pit.
  30. 30 "All the princes of the north and the Sidonians are there with others who have died. Once a terror, they have been put to shame. They lie there as outcasts with others who were slaughtered by the sword. They share the shame of all who have descended to the pit.
  31. 31 "When Pharaoh and his entire army arrive, he will take comfort that he is not alone in having his hordes killed, says the Sovereign LORD.
  32. 32 Although I have caused his terror to fall upon all the living, Pharaoh and his hordes will lie there among the outcasts who were slaughtered by the sword. I, the Sovereign LORD, have spoken!"
