Ezekiel 28 meaning explained in AI Summary

Ezekiel 28 contains two prophecies, both directed against arrogant rulers who considered themselves godlike:

1. Prophecy against the Prince of Tyre (Verses 1-19):

  • The Prince's Pride (1-10): Ezekiel condemns the ruler of Tyre for his arrogance and pride. He boasts of being wiser than Daniel and claims to be a god sitting in the seat of gods. This pride, fueled by Tyre's wealth and strategic location, leads him to believe he is invincible.
  • Judgment and Fall (11-19): God declares judgment on the Prince of Tyre for his blasphemy. He will be brought down by a ruthless foreign king (often interpreted as Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon). Tyre's beauty and wealth will be destroyed, leaving it a desolate ruin.
  • Symbolic Language: While referring to a historical ruler, the language used in this section, particularly the description of the cherub and the garden of Eden, suggests a broader spiritual reality. Some interpret this as a condemnation of the spirit of pride and self-exaltation that can corrupt any leader.

2. Prophecy against Sidon (Verses 20-26):

  • Judgment on Sidon: This shorter prophecy focuses on Tyre's neighbor and ally, Sidon. God declares judgment on Sidon for its violence and pride.
  • Israel's Restoration: The destruction of these enemies will pave the way for Israel's restoration. God promises to gather his people back to their land and dwell among them in peace and security.

Key Themes:

  • Pride and its Consequences: The chapter highlights the destructive nature of pride and how it ultimately leads to downfall.
  • God's Sovereignty: Despite the arrogance of earthly rulers, God remains sovereign and will judge those who exalt themselves.
  • Hope for Israel: Even amidst judgment on the wicked, God's promise of restoration and blessing for his people remains.

Overall, Ezekiel 28 serves as a stark warning against pride and a reminder of God's ultimate power and judgment. It also offers a message of hope and restoration for God's people.

Ezekiel 28 bible study ai commentary

Ezekiel 28 contains a dual prophecy primarily against the ruler of Tyre. It begins with a direct oracle against the human prince's arrogance and divine aspirations, foretelling his humiliating downfall. The chapter then shifts into a lament for the "king" of Tyre, using exalted, cosmic language reminiscent of Eden and a heavenly fall, which is widely interpreted as a typological description of Satan's original rebellion and fall from grace. Following these judgments, a brief oracle against the neighboring city of Sidon is given, culminating in a promise of restoration and security for the nation of Israel.

Ezekiel 28 Context

The prophecy is set in the 6th century BC, during the Babylonian exile. Tyre was a powerful Phoenician island city-state, renowned for its immense wealth from maritime trade and its fortress-like security, which fostered a deep sense of pride and self-sufficiency. Its ruler, likely Ithobaal II, embodied this hubris. The oracle uses this historical context as a foundation for a theological polemic against human pride and, allegorically, against the cosmic enemy of God. The imagery subverts Canaanite and Mesopotamian myths about divine gardens and holy mountains, reclaiming them for Yahweh's sole sovereignty.

Ezekiel 28:1-5

The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, say to the prince of Tyre, Thus says the Lord God:“Because your heart is proud, and you have said, ‘I am a god,I sit in the seat of the gods,in the heart of the seas,’yet you are but a man, and no god, though you make your heart like the heart of a god—you are indeed wiser than Daniel;no secret is hidden from you;by your wisdom and your understandingyou have made yourself wealth, and have gathered gold and silverinto your treasuries;by your great wisdom in your tradeyou have increased your wealth, and your heart has become proud in your wealth—

In-depth-analysis

  • Prince of Tyre: The Hebrew word is nagid, meaning "leader" or "prince," pointing to a human ruler.
  • ‘I am a god’: This is the core sin—arrogance (hubris) and self-deification. The prince attributes his success not to God but to his own divinity. His throne ("seat of the gods") is his island fortress, which he sees as a divine realm.
  • 'Wiser than Daniel': This is likely sarcastic praise. Daniel was legendary among the exiles for his God-given wisdom (Dan 1:20, 5:11-12). Ezekiel uses this contemporary figure to mock the prince's belief in his own supreme wisdom.
  • Wisdom, Trade, Wealth, Pride: The text traces a clear, destructive progression. Wisdom led to trade, trade to wealth, and wealth to heart-lifting pride, which is the root of his divine claim.

Bible references

  • Dan 4:30: "...Is not this great Babylon, which I have built... by the might of my power and for the glory of my majesty?" (King Nebuchadnezzar's hubris).
  • Prov 16:18: "Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall." (The principle of pride leading to downfall).
  • Acts 12:22-23: "...The voice of a god, and not of a man! ...the angel of the Lord struck him, because he did not give God the glory..." (Herod's judgment for accepting worship).

Cross references

Ezekiel 28:6-10

therefore thus says the Lord God:Because you make your heartlike the heart of a god, therefore, behold, I will bring foreigners upon you,the most ruthless of the nations;and they shall draw their swords against the beauty of your wisdomand defile your splendor. They shall thrust you down into the pit,and you shall die the death of the slainin the heart of the seas. Will you still say, ‘I am a god,’in the presence of those who kill you, though you are but a man, and no god,in the hands of those who wound you?You shall die the death of the uncircumcisedby the hand of foreigners;for I have spoken, declares the Lord God.”

In-depth-analysis

  • Judgment's Logic: The punishment directly counters the sin. Because the prince claimed to be God, God will prove he is merely a mortal man.
  • 'Most ruthless of the nations': This points to the Neo-Babylonian empire under Nebuchadnezzar, known for its brutal warfare, which laid a 13-year siege to Tyre.
  • 'Die the death of the uncircumcised': For a Phoenician (a people who practiced circumcision), this was a curse of deep shame and dishonor, implying he would die an outcast, cut off from his people and any covenantal honor.
  • The ultimate irony: His divine claims will be silenced by a violent, human death. The "heart of the seas" that he saw as his divine throne will become his watery grave.

Bible references

  • Isa 2:11-12: "The haughty looks of man shall be brought low... For the Lord of hosts has a day against all that is proud and lofty..." (The 'Day of the Lord' humbles the proud).
  • Eze 31:18: "...You shall be brought down with the trees of Eden to the world below... You shall lie among the uncircumcised..." (Similar judgment against the proud Pharaoh of Egypt).
  • Ps 49:12: "But man in his pomp will not endure; he is like the beasts that perish." (The transience of human glory).

Cross references

Ezekiel 28:11-15

Moreover, the word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, raise a lamentation over the king of Tyre, and say to him, Thus says the Lord God:“You were the signet of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. You were in Eden, the garden of God;every precious stone was your covering...On the day that you were createdthey were prepared. You were an anointed guardian cherub.I placed you;you were on the holy mountain of God;...You were blameless in your waysfrom the day you were created, till unrighteousness was found in you.

In-depth-analysis

  • King of Tyre: The title shifts from nagid (prince) to melek (king), signaling a shift in subject. The language becomes supernatural, using the earthly king as a type or symbol for a greater cosmic being.
  • 'Signet of perfection': Implies a perfect model or standard, language that transcends a human ruler.
  • 'Eden, the garden of God': This is not the Eden of Adam and Eve but a mineral Eden, adorned with nine precious stones (matching some in the High Priest's breastplate, Exod 28:17-20). It depicts a being of the highest created order in God's immediate presence.
  • 'Anointed guardian cherub' (kerub mimshach hasokek): Kerub are high-ranking angelic beings, guardians of God's holiness (Gen 3:24, Eze 10:1-22). "Anointed" (mimshach) signifies a consecrated, high-ranking role, possibly a protector of God's throne on His "holy mountain."
  • 'Day you were created': This word (bara), the same used in Gen 1:1, points to a direct creation by God, not a human birth. It establishes his status as a creature, not the Creator.
  • 'Till unrighteousness was found in you': Marks a distinct point of rebellion. He was created perfect but fell due to a choice made from within.

Bible references

  • Gen 3:24: "...he placed the cherubim... to guard the way to the tree of life." (Cherubim as guardians of God's holy space).
  • Isa 14:12: "How you are fallen from heaven, O Day Star, son of Dawn! How you are cut down to the ground..." (Parallel passage describing the fall of a heavenly being, linked to the King of Babylon).
  • Luke 10:18: "And he said to them, ‘I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.’" (Jesus affirming Satan's fall from a place of glory).

Cross references

2 Cor 11:14 (Satan as an angel of light), Jude 1:6 (angels who left their proper domain), Rev 12:7-9 (Satan thrown out of heaven), Exod 28:17-20 (priestly breastplate stones).

Ezekiel 28:16-19

In the abundance of your tradeyou were filled with violence in your midst, and you sinned;so I cast you as a profane thing from the mountain of God,and I destroyed you, O guardian cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.Your heart was proud because of your beauty;you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor.I cast you to the ground;I exposed you before kings,to feast their eyes on you....I made fire come out from your midst;it consumed you...all who know you among the peoples are appalled at you;you have come to a dreadful endand shall be no more forever.”

In-depth-analysis

  • The Fall: The sin has both a literal and typological meaning.
    • Literal (Tyre): Abundant trade led to violent and unjust business practices.
    • Typological (Satan): His "trade" was self-promotion, trafficking in pride and rebellion among other angels. His "violence" was against God's divine order.
  • Pride in Beauty: The root sin is identified as pride, which corrupted his God-given wisdom and beauty into tools for self-glorification.
  • The Judgment: The punishment mirrors the fall.
    • 'Cast you as a profane thing': Expelled from God's holy presence.
    • 'Fire come out from your midst': A profound image of self-destruction. The very thing he was proud of—his splendor—becomes the source of his judgment. This parallels Tyre's destruction (often by fire) but also implies an internal, consuming judgment.
    • 'Shall be no more forever': A final, irreversible judgment.

Bible references

  • Isa 14:15: "But you are brought down to Sheol, to the far reaches of the pit." (The destination after the fall).
  • Rev 12:9: "And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan... thrown down to the earth..." (The New Testament depiction of this expulsion).
  • 1 Tim 3:6: "He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil." (The "condemnation of the devil" is directly linked to pride).

Cross references

Obad 1:3-4 (pride leading to being brought down), Prov 11:21 (the wicked will not go unpunished), Mal 4:3 (wicked as ashes underfoot), Rev 20:10 (devil cast into the lake of fire).

Ezekiel 28:20-24

The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, set your face toward Sidon, and prophesy against it and say, Thus says the Lord God: “Behold, I am against you, O Sidon, and I will be glorified in your midst. And they shall know that I am the Lord, when I execute judgments in her and manifest my holiness in her. For I will send pestilence into her, and blood into her streets... Then for the house of Israel there shall be no more a brier to prick or a thorn to hurt them from among all their neighbors who have treated them with contempt. Then they shall know that I am the Lord God.”

In-depth-analysis

  • Against Sidon: A shorter oracle against Tyre's sister-city and parent state. Sidon often shared in Tyre's arrogance and pagan practices.
  • 'Know that I am the LORD': A key refrain in Ezekiel. God's judgments are not merely punitive; they are self-revelatory. His actions demonstrate His sovereignty and holiness to both the judged nations and His own people, Israel.
  • Brier and Thorn: The surrounding hostile nations are described as a source of constant pain and irritation to Israel. Their judgment is necessary for Israel's future peace and security.

Bible references

  • Num 33:55: "But if you do not drive out the inhabitants... those whom you let remain shall be as barbs in your eyes and thorns in your sides..." (Fulfillment of an earlier warning).
  • Exod 14:4: "...And I will get glory over Pharaoh and all his host, and the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord." (God's judgment on Egypt for the same revelatory purpose).

Cross references

Josh 23:13 (warning about thorns and snares), Isa 23:4,12 (other prophecies against Sidon), Eze 38:23 (God's self-glorification through judgment).

Ezekiel 28:25-26

“Thus says the Lord God: When I have gathered the house of Israel from the peoples among whom they are scattered, and have manifested my holiness in them in the sight of the nations, then they shall dwell in their own land that I gave to my servant Jacob. And they shall dwell securely in it, and they shall build houses and plant vineyards. They shall dwell securely, when I execute judgments on all their neighbors who have treated them with contempt. Then they shall know that I am the Lord their God.”

In-depth-analysis

  • Shift to Restoration: Oracles against the nations in Ezekiel often conclude with a promise of Israel's restoration. The judgment on gentile nations is the prelude to Israel's salvation and security.
  • Covenant Fulfillment: This promise echoes the land covenant given to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (Gen 12:1-3, Gen 15:18-21).
  • Manifested Holiness: God's holiness is shown in two ways: (1) by judging the nations and (2) by graciously restoring His covenant people. Israel's restoration will be a public witness to the nations.
  • Security (betach): The promise is not just for land, but for complete peace and security, free from the "briers and thorns" of hostile neighbors.

Bible references

  • Jer 23:7-8: "...they shall say, 'As the Lord lives who brought up... the house of Israel from the north country and from all the countries where he had driven them.' Then they shall dwell in their own land." (Parallel prophecy of restoration).
  • Amos 9:14-15: "I will restore the fortunes of my people Israel... they shall plant vineyards and drink their wine... I will plant them on their land, and they shall never again be uprooted..." (The finality of the restoration).
  • Eze 36:24, 28: "I will take you from the nations... and bring you into your own land... and you shall be my people, and I will be your God." (The theme of restoration central to Ezekiel).

Cross references

Isa 65:21 (building houses and planting vineyards), Deut 30:3-5 (promise to gather the scattered), Eze 11:17 (gathering of Israel), Eze 34:28 (dwelling securely), Mic 4:4 (vine and fig tree imagery).

Ezekiel chapter 28 analysis

  • Typological Prophecy: This chapter is a primary example of biblical typology. The historical Prince/King of Tyre serves as a type or earthly model for a greater spiritual reality—the fall of Satan. The pride, splendor, high station, and downfall of the human king perfectly mirror the traditional understanding of Satan's rebellion. The human sin of pride is shown to be a reenactment of the original cosmic sin.
  • Polemics against Paganism: By using terms like "Eden" and "holy mountain of God," Ezekiel co-opts the religious imagery of Tyre's pagan neighbors (like the god Baal dwelling on Mount Zaphon) and subordinates it to Yahweh. He declares that the true divine mountain and garden belong exclusively to the God of Israel, and any claimant to that honor is a usurper to be judged.
  • Connection to the Gap Theory: Some proponents of the "Gap Theory" (the belief in a time gap between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2) use Ezekiel 28:11-19 and Isaiah 14:12-15 as scriptural evidence. They propose that Satan's fall occurred during this gap, leading to the earth becoming "formless and void" (Gen 1:2) and necessitating a re-creation by God. While this is a specific interpretive framework, these passages are its primary support.
  • The Internal Source of Sin and Judgment: A key theological point is that the "cherub's" unrighteousness was "found in" him. Later, "fire [came] out from your midst; it consumed you." This presents sin not as an external force but as a corruption from within. Similarly, the judgment is not just an external act but a form of divine-sponsored self-immolation, where the creature's own corrupted glory becomes the instrument of its destruction.

Ezekiel 28 summary

Ezekiel 28 delivers a prophecy of judgment against the ruler of Tyre for his god-like pride, foretelling his death and humiliation. It then transitions to a lament for the "king" of Tyre, using cosmic, Edenic language to describe the creation, rebellion, and fall of a perfect guardian cherub, widely interpreted as an allegory for Satan. After a short judgment on Sidon, the chapter concludes with a promise to gather Israel from the nations and restore them to a life of security in their own land, demonstrating God's ultimate sovereignty and faithfulness.

  2. 2 Son of man, say unto the prince of Tyrus, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thine heart is lifted up, and thou hast said, I am a God, I sit in the seat of God, in the midst of the seas; yet thou art a man, and not God, though thou set thine heart as the heart of God:
  3. 3 Behold, thou art wiser than Daniel; there is no secret that they can hide from thee:
  4. 4 With thy wisdom and with thine understanding thou hast gotten thee riches, and hast gotten gold and silver into thy treasures:
  5. 5 By thy great wisdom and by thy traffick hast thou increased thy riches, and thine heart is lifted up because of thy riches:
  6. 6 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thou hast set thine heart as the heart of God;
  7. 7 Behold, therefore I will bring strangers upon thee, the terrible of the nations: and they shall draw their swords against the beauty of thy wisdom, and they shall defile thy brightness.
  8. 8 They shall bring thee down to the pit, and thou shalt die the deaths of them that are slain in the midst of the seas.
  9. 9 Wilt thou yet say before him that slayeth thee, I am God? but thou shalt be a man, and no God, in the hand of him that slayeth thee.
  10. 10 Thou shalt die the deaths of the uncircumcised by the hand of strangers: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord GOD.
  11. 11 Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
  12. 12 Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty.
  13. 13 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.
  14. 14 Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.
  15. 15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.
  16. 16 By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.
  17. 17 Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.
  18. 18 Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffick; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee.
  19. 19 All they that know thee among the people shall be astonished at thee: thou shalt be a terror, and never shalt thou be any more.
  20. 20 Again the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
  21. 21 Son of man, set thy face against Zidon, and prophesy against it,
  22. 22 And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Zidon; and I will be glorified in the midst of thee: and they shall know that I am the LORD, when I shall have executed judgments in her, and shall be sanctified in her.
  23. 23 For I will send into her pestilence, and blood into her streets; and the wounded shall be judged in the midst of her by the sword upon her on every side; and they shall know that I am the LORD.
  24. 24 And there shall be no more a pricking brier unto the house of Israel, nor any grieving thorn of all that are round about them, that despised them; and they shall know that I am the Lord GOD.
  25. 25 Thus saith the Lord GOD; When I shall have gathered the house of Israel from the people among whom they are scattered, and shall be sanctified in them in the sight of the heathen, then shall they dwell in their land that I have given to my servant Jacob.
  26. 26 And they shall dwell safely therein, and shall build houses, and plant vineyards; yea, they shall dwell with confidence, when I have executed judgments upon all those that despise them round about them; and they shall know that I am the LORD their God.

Ezekiel chapter 28 niv

  1. 1 The word of the LORD came to me:
  2. 2 "Son of man, say to the ruler of Tyre, 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: "?'In the pride of your heart you say, "I am a god; I sit on the throne of a god in the heart of the seas." But you are a mere mortal and not a god, though you think you are as wise as a god.
  3. 3 Are you wiser than Daniel? Is no secret hidden from you?
  4. 4 By your wisdom and understanding you have gained wealth for yourself and amassed gold and silver in your treasuries.
  5. 5 By your great skill in trading you have increased your wealth, and because of your wealth your heart has grown proud.
  6. 6 "?'Therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says: "?'Because you think you are wise, as wise as a god,
  7. 7 I am going to bring foreigners against you, the most ruthless of nations; they will draw their swords against your beauty and wisdom and pierce your shining splendor.
  8. 8 They will bring you down to the pit, and you will die a violent death in the heart of the seas.
  9. 9 Will you then say, "I am a god," in the presence of those who kill you? You will be but a mortal, not a god, in the hands of those who slay you.
  10. 10 You will die the death of the uncircumcised at the hands of foreigners. I have spoken, declares the Sovereign LORD.'?"
  11. 11 The word of the LORD came to me:
  12. 12 "Son of man, take up a lament concerning the king of Tyre and say to him: 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: "?'You were the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.
  13. 13 You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone adorned you: carnelian, chrysolite and emerald, topaz, onyx and jasper, lapis lazuli, turquoise and beryl. Your settings and mountings were made of gold; on the day you were created they were prepared.
  14. 14 You were anointed as a guardian cherub, for so I ordained you. You were on the holy mount of God; you walked among the fiery stones.
  15. 15 You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created till wickedness was found in you.
  16. 16 Through your widespread trade you were filled with violence, and you sinned. So I drove you in disgrace from the mount of God, and I expelled you, guardian cherub, from among the fiery stones.
  17. 17 Your heart became proud on account of your beauty, and you corrupted your wisdom because of your splendor. So I threw you to the earth; I made a spectacle of you before kings.
  18. 18 By your many sins and dishonest trade you have desecrated your sanctuaries. So I made a fire come out from you, and it consumed you, and I reduced you to ashes on the ground in the sight of all who were watching.
  19. 19 All the nations who knew you are appalled at you; you have come to a horrible end and will be no more.'?"
  20. 20 The word of the LORD came to me:
  21. 21 "Son of man, set your face against Sidon; prophesy against her
  22. 22 and say: 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: "?'I am against you, Sidon, and among you I will display my glory. You will know that I am the LORD, when I inflict punishment on you and within you am proved to be holy.
  23. 23 I will send a plague upon you and make blood flow in your streets. The slain will fall within you, with the sword against you on every side. Then you will know that I am the LORD.
  24. 24 "?'No longer will the people of Israel have malicious neighbors who are painful briers and sharp thorns. Then they will know that I am the Sovereign LORD.
  25. 25 "?'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: When I gather the people of Israel from the nations where they have been scattered, I will be proved holy through them in the sight of the nations. Then they will live in their own land, which I gave to my servant Jacob.
  26. 26 They will live there in safety and will build houses and plant vineyards; they will live in safety when I inflict punishment on all their neighbors who maligned them. Then they will know that I am the LORD their God.'?"

Ezekiel chapter 28 esv

  1. 1 The word of the LORD came to me:
  2. 2 "Son of man, say to the prince of Tyre, Thus says the Lord GOD: "Because your heart is proud, and you have said, 'I am a god, I sit in the seat of the gods, in the heart of the seas,' yet you are but a man, and no god, though you make your heart like the heart of a god ?
  3. 3 you are indeed wiser than Daniel; no secret is hidden from you;
  4. 4 by your wisdom and your understanding you have made wealth for yourself, and have gathered gold and silver into your treasuries;
  5. 5 by your great wisdom in your trade you have increased your wealth, and your heart has become proud in your wealth ?
  6. 6 therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Because you make your heart like the heart of a god,
  7. 7 therefore, behold, I will bring foreigners upon you, the most ruthless of the nations; and they shall draw their swords against the beauty of your wisdom and defile your splendor.
  8. 8 They shall thrust you down into the pit, and you shall die the death of the slain in the heart of the seas.
  9. 9 Will you still say, 'I am a god,' in the presence of those who kill you, though you are but a man, and no god, in the hands of those who slay you?
  10. 10 You shall die the death of the uncircumcised by the hand of foreigners; for I have spoken, declares the Lord GOD."
  11. 11 Moreover, the word of the LORD came to me:
  12. 12 "Son of man, raise a lamentation over the king of Tyre, and say to him, Thus says the Lord GOD: "You were the signet of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.
  13. 13 You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone was your covering, sardius, topaz, and diamond, beryl, onyx, and jasper, sapphire, emerald, and carbuncle; and crafted in gold were your settings and your engravings. On the day that you were created they were prepared.
  14. 14 You were an anointed guardian cherub. I placed you; you were on the holy mountain of God; in the midst of the stones of fire you walked.
  15. 15 You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created, till unrighteousness was found in you.
  16. 16 In the abundance of your trade you were filled with violence in your midst, and you sinned; so I cast you as a profane thing from the mountain of God, and I destroyed you, O guardian cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.
  17. 17 Your heart was proud because of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor. I cast you to the ground; I exposed you before kings, to feast their eyes on you.
  18. 18 By the multitude of your iniquities, in the unrighteousness of your trade you profaned your sanctuaries; so I brought fire out from your midst; it consumed you, and I turned you to ashes on the earth in the sight of all who saw you.
  19. 19 All who know you among the peoples are appalled at you; you have come to a dreadful end and shall be no more forever."
  20. 20 The word of the LORD came to me:
  21. 21 "Son of man, set your face toward Sidon, and prophesy against her
  22. 22 and say, Thus says the Lord GOD: "Behold, I am against you, O Sidon, and I will manifest my glory in your midst. And they shall know that I am the LORD when I execute judgments in her and manifest my holiness in her;
  23. 23 for I will send pestilence into her, and blood into her streets; and the slain shall fall in her midst, by the sword that is against her on every side. Then they will know that I am the LORD.
  24. 24 "And for the house of Israel there shall be no more a brier to prick or a thorn to hurt them among all their neighbors who have treated them with contempt. Then they will know that I am the Lord GOD.
  25. 25 "Thus says the Lord GOD: When I gather the house of Israel from the peoples among whom they are scattered, and manifest my holiness in them in the sight of the nations, then they shall dwell in their own land that I gave to my servant Jacob.
  26. 26 And they shall dwell securely in it, and they shall build houses and plant vineyards. They shall dwell securely, when I execute judgments upon all their neighbors who have treated them with contempt. Then they will know that I am the LORD their God."

Ezekiel chapter 28 nlt

  1. 1 Then this message came to me from the LORD:
  2. 2 "Son of man, give the prince of Tyre this message from the Sovereign LORD: "In your great pride you claim, 'I am a god!
I sit on a divine throne in the heart of the sea.'
But you are only a man and not a god,
though you boast that you are a god.
  3. 3 You regard yourself as wiser than Daniel
and think no secret is hidden from you.
  4. 4 With your wisdom and understanding you have amassed great wealth ?
gold and silver for your treasuries.
  5. 5 Yes, your wisdom has made you very rich,
and your riches have made you very proud.
  6. 6 "Therefore, this is what the Sovereign LORD says:
Because you think you are as wise as a god,
  7. 7 I will now bring against you a foreign army,
    the terror of the nations.
They will draw their swords against your marvelous wisdom
    and defile your splendor!
  8. 8 They will bring you down to the pit,
and you will die in the heart of the sea,
    pierced with many wounds.
  9. 9 Will you then boast, 'I am a god!'
    to those who kill you?
To them you will be no god
    but merely a man!
  10. 10 You will die like an outcast
    at the hands of foreigners.
I, the Sovereign LORD, have spoken!"
  11. 11 Then this further message came to me from the LORD:
  12. 12 "Son of man, sing this funeral song for the king of Tyre. Give him this message from the Sovereign LORD: "You were the model of perfection,
full of wisdom and exquisite in beauty.
  13. 13 You were in Eden,
    the garden of God.
Your clothing was adorned with every precious stone ?
red carnelian, pale-green peridot, white moonstone,
    blue-green beryl, onyx, green jasper,
blue lapis lazuli, turquoise, and emerald ?
    all beautifully crafted for you
and set in the finest gold.
    They were given to you
on the day you were created.
  14. 14 I ordained and anointed you
    as the mighty angelic guardian.
You had access to the holy mountain of God
and walked among the stones of fire.
  15. 15 "You were blameless in all you did
from the day you were created
until the day evil was found in you.
  16. 16 Your rich commerce led you to violence,
    and you sinned.
So I banished you in disgrace
    from the mountain of God.
I expelled you, O mighty guardian,
from your place among the stones of fire.
  17. 17 Your heart was filled with pride
    because of all your beauty.
    Your wisdom was corrupted
    by your love of splendor.
So I threw you to the ground
and exposed you to the curious gaze of kings.
  18. 18 You defiled your sanctuaries
with your many sins and your dishonest trade.
So I brought fire out from within you,
    and it consumed you.
I reduced you to ashes on the ground
in the sight of all who were watching.
  19. 19 All who knew you are appalled at your fate.
You have come to a terrible end,
and you will exist no more."
  20. 20 Then another message came to me from the LORD:
  21. 21 "Son of man, turn and face the city of Sidon and prophesy against it.
  22. 22 Give the people of Sidon this message from the Sovereign LORD: "I am your enemy, O Sidon,
and I will reveal my glory by what I do to you.
When I bring judgment against you
and reveal my holiness among you,
    everyone watching will know
    that I am the LORD.
  23. 23 I will send a plague against you,
and blood will be spilled in your streets.
The attack will come from every direction,
and your people will lie slaughtered within your walls.
    Then everyone will know
    that I am the LORD.
  24. 24 No longer will Israel's scornful neighbors
prick and tear at her like briers and thorns.
    For then they will know
that I am the Sovereign LORD.
  25. 25 "This is what the Sovereign LORD says: The people of Israel will again live in their own land, the land I gave my servant Jacob. For I will gather them from the distant lands where I have scattered them. I will reveal to the nations of the world my holiness among my people.
  26. 26 They will live safely in Israel and build homes and plant vineyards. And when I punish the neighboring nations that treated them with contempt, they will know that I am the LORD their God."
