Exodus 39 meaning explained in AI Summary

The priestly garments for Aaron and his sons are made, including the breastplate, the ephod, and the turban. These garments are crafted with great care and detail, as they will be worn when ministering before God.

Exodus Chapter 39 details the completion and inspection of the tabernacle and the priestly garments, all crafted according to God's precise instructions given to Moses.

  • Completion of the Tabernacle Furnishings (vv. 1-31): This section describes the finishing touches on the various elements of the tabernacle, including the ark of the covenant with its mercy seat, the table for the bread of the Presence, the golden lampstand, the altar of incense, the bronze altar of burnt offering, the courtyard with its hangings and entrance, and all the necessary utensils for worship. The craftsmen meticulously followed the divine blueprint, using the materials donated by the Israelites.
  • Creation of the Priestly Garments (vv. 32-41): This section focuses on the creation of the sacred garments for Aaron and his sons, who would serve as priests. This includes the ephod (a sacred vest), the breastpiece with the Urim and Thummim (for seeking God's will), the robe of the ephod, the woven tunic, the turban, and the sashes. These garments, made with fine fabrics, gold, and precious stones, reflected the glory and holiness of God.
  • Presentation and Approval (vv. 42-43): Finally, all the completed items, from the tabernacle structure to the smallest utensils and garments, were brought to Moses for inspection. Moses, acting as God's representative, carefully examined everything and confirmed that it was all made according to the Lord's commands.

Overall, Exodus 39 emphasizes the importance of obedience and meticulous craftsmanship in sacred matters. The detailed descriptions highlight the sacredness of the tabernacle as God's dwelling place among his people and the significance of the priesthood in mediating his presence.

Exodus 39 bible study ai commentary

Exodus 39 chronicles the faithful and meticulous completion of the holy priestly garments and the final inventory of all Tabernacle components. It stands as a testament to Israel's obedience, directly contrasting with the disobedience of the golden calf. The recurring refrain, "as the LORD commanded Moses," underscores the central theme: all work was done in precise conformity to the divine pattern. This chapter is not merely a repetition of the instructions from chapter 28, but a verification of their fulfillment, culminating in Moses' inspection and blessing, which powerfully echoes God's own review and blessing of His creation in Genesis.

Exodus 39 Context

The construction of the Tabernacle and its articles occurs in the Sinai wilderness, shortly after the covenant was established and subsequently broken by the golden calf incident (Exodus 32). This chapter, detailing the successful and obedient construction, serves as a narrative and theological "repair" of that breach. In the Ancient Near East, deities were housed in temples with elaborate cultic objects and priests wore specific regalia to signify their office and appease the gods. The Tabernacle account sets Yahweh apart: He provides the design, empowers the craftsmen (Bezalel and Oholiab), and demands worship on His terms, based on holiness and covenant relationship, not on human invention or appeasement rituals common in Egypt and Canaan.

Exodus 39:1

Of the blue and purple and scarlet yarns they made finely woven garments for ministering in the Holy Place. They also made the holy garments for Aaron, as the LORD commanded Moses.

In-depth-analysis

  • This verse serves as a title and summary for the section on the priestly vestments.
  • Finely woven garments: The Hebrew bigde haserad refers to special garments for service. Their quality reflects the honor and sanctity of the work.
  • Ministering in the Holy Place: Establishes the purpose of these garments; they are functional holy items, not mere decoration. They set the priest apart for his sacred duties.
  • As the LORD commanded Moses: The first of seven instances of this key phrase in the chapter, setting the theme of perfect obedience to the divine blueprint given in Exodus 28.

Bible references

  • Exodus 28:2-5: "You shall make holy garments for Aaron... of gold, of blue and purple and scarlet yarns..." (The direct command being fulfilled).
  • Hebrews 9:24: "For Christ has entered, not into holy places made with hands... but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf." (The ultimate purpose of a High Priest).
  • Revelation 19:8: "it was granted her to clothe herself with fine linen, bright and pureā€ā€”for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints." (Righteousness as a garment).

Cross references

Lev 8:7-9 (clothing Aaron), Num 4:5-14 (using colored cloths for transport), 1 Sam 15:22 (obedience over sacrifice), Heb 8:5 (making according to the pattern).

Exodus 39:2-7

He made the ephod of gold, of blue and purple and scarlet yarns, and of fine twined linen... And he made the ephod. They hammered out gold leaf, and he cut it into threads to work into the blue and purple and the scarlet yarns... They had shoulder pieces joining it at its two ends... And they set the stones on the shoulder pieces of the ephod as stones of remembrance for the sons of Israel, as the LORD commanded Moses.

In-depth-analysis

  • Ephod: The primary outer vestment of the High Priest, an apron-like garment.
  • Gold... cut into threads: This intricate, difficult process represents divine glory and kingship (gold) being perfectly woven into the fabric of the priesthood. The heavenly (blue), royal (purple), and sacrificial (scarlet) aspects are united with divine splendor.
  • Shoulder pieces: The High Priest carried the names of the twelve tribes on two onyx stones, one on each shoulder. This symbolizes his role in bearing the burden and responsibility of the entire nation before God.
  • Stones of remembrance: He literally carries the people "before the LORD" for a memorial, constantly bringing them to God's attention in his intercessory role.

Bible references

  • Isaiah 9:6: "For to us a child is born... and the government shall be upon his shoulder..." (Messiah bearing authority and responsibility).
  • Luke 15:5: "And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing." (Christ, the Good Shepherd, bearing his lost sheep).
  • Hebrews 7:25: "Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them." (Christ's perpetual priestly role).

Cross references

Exod 28:6-14 (the instructions for the ephod), Zech 6:13 (the priest on the throne), Gal 6:2 (bear one another's burdens).

Exodus 39:8-21

He made the breastpiece, in skilled work, in the style of the ephod, of gold, of blue... He made the breastpiece. It was square... a setting of four rows of stones... The stones were according to the names of the sons of Israel, twelve, according to their names, like the engravings of a signet, each with its own name for the twelve tribes... and they bound the breastpiece... so that it could not be detached from the ephod, as the LORD commanded Moses.

In-depth-analysis

  • Breastpiece: Hebrew choshen, often translated "breastpiece of judgment." It was a pouch worn over the heart containing the Urim and Thummim (implied here, see Exod 28:30).
  • Over the heart: While the shoulders represent strength, the heart represents love, affection, and volition. The High Priest carries the people on his heart, signifying God's intimate love and concern for them.
  • Twelve stones: Each tribe represented by a unique, precious stone. This signifies both the individuality and the preciousness of each tribe in God's eyes, united in one piece.
  • Cannot be detached: The secure binding of the breastpiece to the ephod shows the inseparable connection between the priest's responsibility (shoulders) and his love/judgment (heart).

Bible references

  • Song of Solomon 8:6: "Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm..." (A prayer for intimacy and inseparable connection).
  • John 13:1: "...having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end." (Christ's abiding love for his people).
  • Revelation 21:19-20: "The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with every kind of jewel..." (The twelve stones find their eschatological fulfillment in the New Jerusalem).

Cross references

Exod 28:15-30 (instructions), Lev 8:8 (placing the Urim and Thummim), Isa 49:16 (engraved on the palms of God's hands), Mal 3:17 (God's treasured possession).

Exodus 39:22-26

He also made the robe of the ephod woven all of blue... with pomegranates of blue and purple and scarlet yarns, and of fine twined linen, all around the hem. They also made bells of pure gold... a bell and a pomegranate... all around the hem of the robe for ministering, as the LORD commanded Moses.

In-depth-analysis

  • Robe... all of blue: The color blue represents heaven. This robe, worn under the ephod, signifies the divine, heavenly origin and character of the priestly ministry.
  • Pomegranates: Symbols of fruitfulness, life, and divine blessing. Their presence on the robe pointed to the life-giving nature of the priest's service.
  • Bells of pure gold: The sound of the bells had a twofold purpose: it announced the High Priest's entrance into and exit from the Holy of Holies, and it signaled that he was alive in God's awesome presence, successfully making intercession. The sound assured the people outside that their representative had not been struck down.

Bible references

  • Exodus 28:35: "...its sound shall be heard when he goes into the Holy Place before the LORD... so that he does not die." (The explicit purpose of the bells).
  • 1 Corinthians 15:55: "'O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?'" (Christ, our High Priest, entered death and emerged alive).
  • Zechariah 14:20: "And on that day there shall be inscribed on the bells of the horses, 'Holy to the LORD.'" (The sacred sound of worship will become universal).

Cross references

Exod 28:31-35 (instructions), Song 4:13 (pomegranates as choice fruits), Matt 7:16 (you will know them by their fruits), 1 Thess 4:16 (the Lord's return with a cry of command).

Exodus 39:27-29

They also made the tunics of fine linen of woven work for Aaron and his sons, and the turban of fine linen, and the caps of fine linen, and the linen britches of fine twined linen, and the sash of fine twined linen and of blue and purple and scarlet yarns, embroidered with needlework, as the LORD commanded Moses.

In-depth-analysis

  • Tunics... of fine linen: Linen was the basic garment for all priests (Aaron and his sons), not just the High Priest. It symbolizes purity, righteousness, and holiness.
  • Turban... Sash: Specific items completing the priestly uniform, each made according to the divine pattern, emphasizing that every detail of holy service matters to God.
  • The absence of wool is notable, as specified in Ezekiel 44:17-18, because it would cause sweat, a symbol of human toil and the curse, which had no place in the sacred service.

Bible references

  • Leviticus 16:4: "He shall put on the holy linen coat and shall have the linen undergarment on his body, and he shall tie the linen sash..." (Linen worn on the Day of Atonement).
  • Ezekiel 44:17-18: "They shall wear linen garments... They shall not gird themselves with anything that causes sweat." (Linen for priests in the future temple).
  • Revelation 19:8: "fine linen, bright and pure... is the righteous deeds of the saints." (The ultimate fulfillment of symbolic righteousness).

Cross references

Exodus 39:30-31

They made the plate of the holy crown of pure gold, and wrote on it an inscription, like the engraving of a signet, "Holy to the LORD." And they tied to it a cord of blue to fasten it on the turban above, as the LORD commanded Moses.

In-depth-analysis

  • Plate of the holy crown: Hebrew tsits. A gleaming gold plate on the High Priest's forehead, the most visible part of his attire.
  • Holy to the LORD: Kodesh la-Yahweh. This inscription was the central declaration of the priesthood. The High Priest's mind and focus were to be dedicated to God's holiness.
  • Purpose: According to Exodus 28:38, this plate allowed the High Priest to "bear any guilt from the holy things" the Israelites consecrated. It made their imperfect offerings acceptable to God. The holiness of the priest "covered" the unholiness of the people's worship.

Bible references

  • Exodus 28:36-38: "It shall be on Aaron's forehead... that they may be accepted before the LORD." (The explicit purpose).
  • 1 Peter 2:5: "...you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ." (Believers now form a holy priesthood).
  • Hebrews 7:26: "For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, an unstained, separated from sinners..." (Christ is perfectly "Holy to the Lord").

Cross references

Lev 10:17 (bearing the iniquity), Zech 3:5 (clean turban), Zech 14:20 (universalizing this holiness), Rom 12:1 (presenting bodies as a living sacrifice).

Exodus 39:32-41

Thus all the work of the tabernacle of the tent of meeting was finished... And they brought the tabernacle to Moses... all its furnishings... the table and all its utensils... the lampstand... the golden altar... the bronze altar... the basin and its stand... the finely worked garments... as the LORD had commanded Moses.

In-depth-analysis

  • Work... was finished: This phrase marks a major completion point in the narrative, mirroring God's completion of creation in Genesis 2:1.
  • Brought... to Moses: The craftsmen do not inaugurate the sanctuary themselves. They bring everything to God's appointed mediator, Moses, submitting their work for his inspection and approval. This demonstrates order and proper authority.
  • The Detailed List: This comprehensive inventory is not redundant. It serves as a formal, legal confirmation that every single command given by God (from Exodus 25-30) has been faithfully executed down to the last tent peg.

Bible references

  • Genesis 2:1: "Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them." (Parallels the language of divine completion).
  • Exodus 25:40: "And see that you make them after the pattern for them, which is being shown you on the mountain." (The guiding principle for all the work).
  • Hebrews 8:5: "They serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things. For when Moses was about to erect the tent, he was instructed by God, saying, 'See that you make everything according to the pattern...'" (NT commentary on the significance of the pattern).

Cross references

1 Kings 7:51 (Solomon brings finished items to the Temple), 2 Cor 5:10 (we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ), Col 1:28 (presenting everyone mature in Christ).

Exodus 39:42-43

According to all that the LORD had commanded Moses, so the people of Israel had done all the work. And Moses saw all the work, and behold, they had done it; as the LORD had commanded, so had they done it. And Moses blessed them.

In-depth-analysis

  • And Moses saw...: This is the theological climax of the entire construction narrative. Moses, acting as God's representative, inspects the work.
  • Behold, they had done it; as the LORD had commanded: This is the verdict. The work is not just complete, but it is perfect in its conformity to the divine will. It is the antithesis of the golden calf (Exod 32:4), where they did as they saw fit.
  • And Moses blessed them: The blessing is the capstone. It is the divine approval mediated through Moses. This act transforms the constructed materials from mere objects into holy vessels fit for God's service.

Polemics

The sequence "Work -> Presentation -> Inspection -> Approval -> Blessing" is a powerful polemic against the self-willed idolatry of the surrounding nations and Israel's own recent failure with the Golden Calf. True worship and communion with God are not products of human ingenuity or imagination (like the calf) but of careful, loving obedience to divine revelation.

Bible references

  • Genesis 1:31: "And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good..." (The strongest parallel; Moses' inspection mirrors God's creative inspection).
  • Genesis 2:3: "So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy..." (The pattern of God finishing, seeing, blessing, and hallowing).
  • John 19:30: "When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, 'It is finished,' and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit." (Christ's declaration of his perfectly completed work).
  • Matthew 25:21: "His master said to him, ā€˜Well done, good and faithful servant...'" (The ultimate divine approval of faithful work).

Cross references

Lev 9:22-23 (Aaron and Moses bless the people), Num 6:23-27 (the Aaronic blessing), Deut 33:1 (the blessing with which Moses blessed Israel).

Exodus chapter 39 analysis

  • Obedience as Worship: The chapter's structure is defined by the sevenfold repetition of "as the LORD commanded Moses" (vv. 1, 5, 7, 21, 26, 29, 31), culminating in the final declaration in v. 43. This refrain elevates the physical labor into an act of perfect worship. The story isn't just about crafting things; it's about a nation's heart being re-aligned with God's will after the apostasy of the calf.
  • The "New Creation" Motif: The parallels with Genesis 1 are intentional and profound.| Genesis 1-2 | Exodus 39-40 || :--- | :--- || God's Spirit hovers over creation (Gen 1:2) | The craftsmen are filled with God's Spirit (Exod 35:31) || God completes the work (Gen 2:1) | The work is finished (Exod 39:32) || God sees that the work is good (Gen 1:31) | Moses sees the work is done as commanded (Exod 39:43) || God blesses the creation (Gen 1:28; 2:3) | Moses blesses the people/work (Exod 39:43) || God comes to dwell/rest (Gen 2:3) | God's glory fills the Tabernacle (Exod 40:34) |This shows the Tabernacle as a microcosm of God's new, redeemed creation—an ordered, holy space where He can dwell among His people.
  • From Idolatry to True Worship: Exodus 32 describes a project initiated by the people ("Up, make us gods"), using their gold, resulting in an idol, and leading to chaos. Exodus 35-39 describes a project initiated by God ("The LORD has called by name"), using the people's willing gifts, resulting in a holy dwelling, and leading to blessing. Chapter 39 is the triumphant proof of this reversal.

Exodus 39 summary

Exodus 39 records the faithful completion of the priestly garments and the final inventory of all Tabernacle components, precisely as God commanded. The chapter highlights Israel's perfect obedience, with Moses inspecting the finished work and pronouncing a blessing, a narrative arc that parallels the Genesis creation account and points forward to the completed work of Christ, our High Priest.

  1. 1 And of the blue, and purple, and scarlet, they made cloths of service, to do service in the holy place, and made the holy garments for Aaron; as the LORD commanded Moses.
  2. 2 And he made the ephod of gold, blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen.
  3. 3 And they did beat the gold into thin plates, and cut it into wires, to work it in the blue, and in the purple, and in the scarlet, and in the fine linen, with cunning work.
  4. 4 They made shoulderpieces for it, to couple it together: by the two edges was it coupled together.
  5. 5 And the curious girdle of his ephod, that was upon it, was of the same, according to the work thereof; of gold, blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen; as the LORD commanded Moses.
  6. 6 And they wrought onyx stones inclosed in ouches of gold, graven, as signets are graven, with the names of the children of Israel.
  7. 7 And he put them on the shoulders of the ephod, that they should be stones for a memorial to the children of Israel; as the LORD commanded Moses.
  8. 8 And he made the breastplate of cunning work, like the work of the ephod; of gold, blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen.
  9. 9 It was foursquare; they made the breastplate double: a span was the length thereof, and a span the breadth thereof, being doubled.
  10. 10 And they set in it four rows of stones: the first row was a sardius, a topaz, and a carbuncle: this was the first row.
  11. 11 And the second row, an emerald, a sapphire, and a diamond.
  12. 12 And the third row, a ligure, an agate, and an amethyst.
  13. 13 And the fourth row, a beryl, an onyx, and a jasper: they were inclosed in ouches of gold in their inclosings.
  14. 14 And the stones were according to the names of the children of Israel, twelve, according to their names, like the engravings of a signet, every one with his name, according to the twelve tribes.
  15. 15 And they made upon the breastplate chains at the ends, of wreathed work of pure gold.
  16. 16 And they made two ouches of gold, and two gold rings; and put the two rings in the two ends of the breastplate.
  17. 17 And they put the two wreathed chains of gold in the two rings on the ends of the breastplate.
  18. 18 And the two ends of the two wreathed chains they fastened in the two ouches, and put them on the shoulderpieces of the ephod, before it.
  19. 19 And they made two rings of gold, and put them on the two ends of the breastplate, upon the border of it, which was on the side of the ephod inward.
  20. 20 And they made two other golden rings, and put them on the two sides of the ephod underneath, toward the forepart of it, over against the other coupling thereof, above the curious girdle of the ephod.
  21. 21 And they did bind the breastplate by his rings unto the rings of the ephod with a lace of blue, that it might be above the curious girdle of the ephod, and that the breastplate might not be loosed from the ephod; as the LORD commanded Moses.
  22. 22 And he made the robe of the ephod of woven work, all of blue.
  23. 23 And there was an hole in the midst of the robe, as the hole of an habergeon, with a band round about the hole, that it should not rend.
  24. 24 And they made upon the hems of the robe pomegranates of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and twined linen.
  25. 25 And they made bells of pure gold, and put the bells between the pomegranates upon the hem of the robe, round about between the pomegranates;
  26. 26 A bell and a pomegranate, a bell and a pomegranate, round about the hem of the robe to minister in; as the LORD commanded Moses.
  27. 27 And they made coats of fine linen of woven work for Aaron, and for his sons,
  28. 28 And a mitre of fine linen, and goodly bonnets of fine linen, and linen breeches of fine twined linen,
  29. 29 And a girdle of fine twined linen, and blue, and purple, and scarlet, of needlework; as the LORD commanded Moses.
  30. 30 And they made the plate of the holy crown of pure gold, and wrote upon it a writing, like to the engravings of a signet, HOLINESS TO THE LORD.
  31. 31 And they tied unto it a lace of blue, to fasten it on high upon the mitre; as the LORD commanded Moses.
  32. 32 Thus was all the work of the tabernacle of the tent of the congregation finished: and the children of Israel did according to all that the LORD commanded Moses, so did they.
  33. 33 And they brought the tabernacle unto Moses, the tent, and all his furniture, his taches, his boards, his bars, and his pillars, and his sockets,
  34. 34 And the covering of rams' skins dyed red, and the covering of badgers' skins, and the vail of the covering,
  35. 35 The ark of the testimony, and the staves thereof, and the mercy seat,
  36. 36 The table, and all the vessels thereof, and the showbread,
  37. 37 The pure candlestick, with the lamps thereof, even with the lamps to be set in order, and all the vessels thereof, and the oil for light,
  38. 38 And the golden altar, and the anointing oil, and the sweet incense, and the hanging for the tabernacle door,
  39. 39 The brazen altar, and his grate of brass, his staves, and all his vessels, the laver and his foot,
  40. 40 The hangings of the court, his pillars, and his sockets, and the hanging for the court gate, his cords, and his pins, and all the vessels of the service of the tabernacle, for the tent of the congregation,
  41. 41 The cloths of service to do service in the holy place, and the holy garments for Aaron the priest, and his sons' garments, to minister in the priest's office.
  42. 42 According to all that the LORD commanded Moses, so the children of Israel made all the work.
  43. 43 And Moses did look upon all the work, and, behold, they had done it as the LORD had commanded, even so had they done it: and Moses blessed them.

Exodus chapter 39 nkjv

  1. 1 Of the blue, purple, and scarlet thread they made garments of ministry, for ministering in the holy place, and made the holy garments for Aaron, as the LORD had commanded Moses.
  2. 2 He made the ephod of gold, blue, purple, and scarlet thread, and of fine woven linen.
  3. 3 And they beat the gold into thin sheets and cut it into threads, to work it in with the blue, purple, and scarlet thread, and the fine linen, into artistic designs.
  4. 4 They made shoulder straps for it to couple it together; it was coupled together at its two edges.
  5. 5 And the intricately woven band of his ephod that was on it was of the same workmanship, woven of gold, blue, purple, and scarlet thread, and of fine woven linen, as the LORD had commanded Moses.
  6. 6 And they set onyx stones, enclosed in settings of gold; they were engraved, as signets are engraved, with the names of the sons of Israel.
  7. 7 He put them on the shoulders of the ephod as memorial stones for the sons of Israel, as the LORD had commanded Moses.
  8. 8 And he made the breastplate, artistically woven like the workmanship of the ephod, of gold, blue, purple, and scarlet thread, and of fine woven linen.
  9. 9 They made the breastplate square by doubling it; a span was its length and a span its width when doubled.
  10. 10 And they set in it four rows of stones: a row with a sardius, a topaz, and an emerald was the first row;
  11. 11 the second row, a turquoise, a sapphire, and a diamond;
  12. 12 the third row, a jacinth, an agate, and an amethyst;
  13. 13 the fourth row, a beryl, an onyx, and a jasper. They were enclosed in settings of gold in their mountings.
  14. 14 There were twelve stones according to the names of the sons of Israel: according to their names, engraved like a signet, each one with its own name according to the twelve tribes.
  15. 15 And they made chains for the breastplate at the ends, like braided cords of pure gold.
  16. 16 They also made two settings of gold and two gold rings, and put the two rings on the two ends of the breastplate.
  17. 17 And they put the two braided chains of gold in the two rings on the ends of the breastplate.
  18. 18 The two ends of the two braided chains they fastened in the two settings, and put them on the shoulder straps of the ephod in the front.
  19. 19 And they made two rings of gold and put them on the two ends of the breastplate, on the edge of it, which was on the inward side of the ephod.
  20. 20 They made two other gold rings and put them on the two shoulder straps, underneath the ephod toward its front, right at the seam above the intricately woven band of the ephod.
  21. 21 And they bound the breastplate by means of its rings to the rings of the ephod with a blue cord, so that it would be above the intricately woven band of the ephod, and that the breastplate would not come loose from the ephod, as the LORD had commanded Moses.
  22. 22 He made the robe of the ephod of woven work, all of blue.
  23. 23 And there was an opening in the middle of the robe, like the opening in a coat of mail, with a woven binding all around the opening, so that it would not tear.
  24. 24 They made on the hem of the robe pomegranates of blue, purple, and scarlet, and of fine woven linen.
  25. 25 And they made bells of pure gold, and put the bells between the pomegranates on the hem of the robe all around between the pomegranates:
  26. 26 a bell and a pomegranate, a bell and a pomegranate, all around the hem of the robe to minister in, as the LORD had commanded Moses.
  27. 27 They made tunics, artistically woven of fine linen, for Aaron and his sons,
  28. 28 a turban of fine linen, exquisite hats of fine linen, short trousers of fine woven linen,
  29. 29 and a sash of fine woven linen with blue, purple, and scarlet thread, made by a weaver, as the LORD had commanded Moses.
  30. 30 Then they made the plate of the holy crown of pure gold, and wrote on it an inscription like the engraving of a signet: HOLINESS TO THE LORD.
  31. 31 And they tied to it a blue cord, to fasten it above on the turban, as the LORD had commanded Moses.
  32. 32 Thus all the work of the tabernacle of the tent of meeting was finished. And the children of Israel did according to all that the LORD had commanded Moses; so they did.
  33. 33 And they brought the tabernacle to Moses, the tent and all its furnishings: its clasps, its boards, its bars, its pillars, and its sockets;
  34. 34 the covering of ram skins dyed red, the covering of badger skins, and the veil of the covering;
  35. 35 the ark of the Testimony with its poles, and the mercy seat;
  36. 36 the table, all its utensils, and the showbread;
  37. 37 the pure gold lampstand with its lamps (the lamps set in order), all its utensils, and the oil for light;
  38. 38 the gold altar, the anointing oil, and the sweet incense; the screen for the tabernacle door;
  39. 39 the bronze altar, its grate of bronze, its poles, and all its utensils; the laver with its base;
  40. 40 the hangings of the court, its pillars and its sockets, the screen for the court gate, its cords, and its pegs; all the utensils for the service of the tabernacle, for the tent of meeting;
  41. 41 and the garments of ministry, to minister in the holy place: the holy garments for Aaron the priest, and his sons' garments, to minister as priests.
  42. 42 According to all that the LORD had commanded Moses, so the children of Israel did all the work.
  43. 43 Then Moses looked over all the work, and indeed they had done it; as the LORD had commanded, just so they had done it. And Moses blessed them.

Exodus chapter 39 niv

  1. 1 From the blue, purple and scarlet yarn they made woven garments for ministering in the sanctuary. They also made sacred garments for Aaron, as the LORD commanded Moses.
  2. 2 They made the ephod of gold, and of blue, purple and scarlet yarn, and of finely twisted linen.
  3. 3 They hammered out thin sheets of gold and cut strands to be worked into the blue, purple and scarlet yarn and fine linen?the work of skilled hands.
  4. 4 They made shoulder pieces for the ephod, which were attached to two of its corners, so it could be fastened.
  5. 5 Its skillfully woven waistband was like it?of one piece with the ephod and made with gold, and with blue, purple and scarlet yarn, and with finely twisted linen, as the LORD commanded Moses.
  6. 6 They mounted the onyx stones in gold filigree settings and engraved them like a seal with the names of the sons of Israel.
  7. 7 Then they fastened them on the shoulder pieces of the ephod as memorial stones for the sons of Israel, as the LORD commanded Moses.
  8. 8 They fashioned the breastpiece?the work of a skilled craftsman. They made it like the ephod: of gold, and of blue, purple and scarlet yarn, and of finely twisted linen.
  9. 9 It was square?a span long and a span wide?and folded double.
  10. 10 Then they mounted four rows of precious stones on it. The first row was carnelian, chrysolite and beryl;
  11. 11 the second row was turquoise, lapis lazuli and emerald;
  12. 12 the third row was jacinth, agate and amethyst;
  13. 13 the fourth row was topaz, onyx and jasper. They were mounted in gold filigree settings.
  14. 14 There were twelve stones, one for each of the names of the sons of Israel, each engraved like a seal with the name of one of the twelve tribes.
  15. 15 For the breastpiece they made braided chains of pure gold, like a rope.
  16. 16 They made two gold filigree settings and two gold rings, and fastened the rings to two of the corners of the breastpiece.
  17. 17 They fastened the two gold chains to the rings at the corners of the breastpiece,
  18. 18 and the other ends of the chains to the two settings, attaching them to the shoulder pieces of the ephod at the front.
  19. 19 They made two gold rings and attached them to the other two corners of the breastpiece on the inside edge next to the ephod.
  20. 20 Then they made two more gold rings and attached them to the bottom of the shoulder pieces on the front of the ephod, close to the seam just above the waistband of the ephod.
  21. 21 They tied the rings of the breastpiece to the rings of the ephod with blue cord, connecting it to the waistband so that the breastpiece would not swing out from the ephod?as the LORD commanded Moses.
  22. 22 They made the robe of the ephod entirely of blue cloth?the work of a weaver?
  23. 23 with an opening in the center of the robe like the opening of a collar, and a band around this opening, so that it would not tear.
  24. 24 They made pomegranates of blue, purple and scarlet yarn and finely twisted linen around the hem of the robe.
  25. 25 And they made bells of pure gold and attached them around the hem between the pomegranates.
  26. 26 The bells and pomegranates alternated around the hem of the robe to be worn for ministering, as the LORD commanded Moses.
  27. 27 For Aaron and his sons, they made tunics of fine linen?the work of a weaver?
  28. 28 and the turban of fine linen, the linen caps and the undergarments of finely twisted linen.
  29. 29 The sash was made of finely twisted linen and blue, purple and scarlet yarn?the work of an embroiderer?as the LORD commanded Moses.
  30. 30 They made the plate, the sacred emblem, out of pure gold and engraved on it, like an inscription on a seal: HOLY TO THE LORD.
  31. 31 Then they fastened a blue cord to it to attach it to the turban, as the LORD commanded Moses.
  32. 32 So all the work on the tabernacle, the tent of meeting, was completed. The Israelites did everything just as the LORD commanded Moses.
  33. 33 Then they brought the tabernacle to Moses: the tent and all its furnishings, its clasps, frames, crossbars, posts and bases;
  34. 34 the covering of ram skins dyed red and the covering of another durable leather and the shielding curtain;
  35. 35 the ark of the covenant law with its poles and the atonement cover;
  36. 36 the table with all its articles and the bread of the Presence;
  37. 37 the pure gold lampstand with its row of lamps and all its accessories, and the olive oil for the light;
  38. 38 the gold altar, the anointing oil, the fragrant incense, and the curtain for the entrance to the tent;
  39. 39 the bronze altar with its bronze grating, its poles and all its utensils; the basin with its stand;
  40. 40 the curtains of the courtyard with its posts and bases, and the curtain for the entrance to the courtyard; the ropes and tent pegs for the courtyard; all the furnishings for the tabernacle, the tent of meeting;
  41. 41 and the woven garments worn for ministering in the sanctuary, both the sacred garments for Aaron the priest and the garments for his sons when serving as priests.
  42. 42 The Israelites had done all the work just as the LORD had commanded Moses.
  43. 43 Moses inspected the work and saw that they had done it just as the LORD had commanded. So Moses blessed them.

Exodus chapter 39 esv

  1. 1 From the blue and purple and scarlet yarns they made finely woven garments, for ministering in the Holy Place. They made the holy garments for Aaron, as the LORD had commanded Moses.
  2. 2 He made the ephod of gold, blue and purple and scarlet yarns, and fine twined linen.
  3. 3 And they hammered out gold leaf, and he cut it into threads to work into the blue and purple and the scarlet yarns, and into the fine twined linen, in skilled design.
  4. 4 They made for the ephod attaching shoulder pieces, joined to it at its two edges.
  5. 5 And the skillfully woven band on it was of one piece with it and made like it, of gold, blue and purple and scarlet yarns, and fine twined linen, as the LORD had commanded Moses.
  6. 6 They made the onyx stones, enclosed in settings of gold filigree, and engraved like the engravings of a signet, according to the names of the sons of Israel.
  7. 7 And he set them on the shoulder pieces of the ephod to be stones of remembrance for the sons of Israel, as the LORD had commanded Moses.
  8. 8 He made the breastpiece, in skilled work, in the style of the ephod, of gold, blue and purple and scarlet yarns, and fine twined linen.
  9. 9 It was square. They made the breastpiece doubled, a span its length and a span its breadth when doubled.
  10. 10 And they set in it four rows of stones. A row of sardius, topaz, and carbuncle was the first row;
  11. 11 and the second row, an emerald, a sapphire, and a diamond;
  12. 12 and the third row, a jacinth, an agate, and an amethyst;
  13. 13 and the fourth row, a beryl, an onyx, and a jasper. They were enclosed in settings of gold filigree.
  14. 14 There were twelve stones with their names according to the names of the sons of Israel. They were like signets, each engraved with its name, for the twelve tribes.
  15. 15 And they made on the breastpiece twisted chains like cords, of pure gold.
  16. 16 And they made two settings of gold filigree and two gold rings, and put the two rings on the two edges of the breastpiece.
  17. 17 And they put the two cords of gold in the two rings at the edges of the breastpiece.
  18. 18 They attached the two ends of the two cords to the two settings of filigree. Thus they attached it in front to the shoulder pieces of the ephod.
  19. 19 Then they made two rings of gold, and put them at the two ends of the breastpiece, on its inside edge next to the ephod.
  20. 20 And they made two rings of gold, and attached them in front to the lower part of the two shoulder pieces of the ephod, at its seam above the skillfully woven band of the ephod.
  21. 21 And they bound the breastpiece by its rings to the rings of the ephod with a lace of blue, so that it should lie on the skillfully woven band of the ephod, and that the breastpiece should not come loose from the ephod, as the LORD had commanded Moses.
  22. 22 He also made the robe of the ephod woven all of blue,
  23. 23 and the opening of the robe in it was like the opening in a garment, with a binding around the opening, so that it might not tear.
  24. 24 On the hem of the robe they made pomegranates of blue and purple and scarlet yarns and fine twined linen.
  25. 25 They also made bells of pure gold, and put the bells between the pomegranates all around the hem of the robe, between the pomegranates ?
  26. 26 a bell and a pomegranate, a bell and a pomegranate around the hem of the robe for ministering, as the LORD had commanded Moses.
  27. 27 They also made the coats, woven of fine linen, for Aaron and his sons,
  28. 28 and the turban of fine linen, and the caps of fine linen, and the linen undergarments of fine twined linen,
  29. 29 and the sash of fine twined linen and of blue and purple and scarlet yarns, embroidered with needlework, as the LORD had commanded Moses.
  30. 30 They made the plate of the holy crown of pure gold, and wrote on it an inscription, like the engraving of a signet, "Holy to the LORD."
  31. 31 And they tied to it a cord of blue to fasten it on the turban above, as the LORD had commanded Moses.
  32. 32 Thus all the work of the tabernacle of the tent of meeting was finished, and the people of Israel did according to all that the LORD had commanded Moses; so they did.
  33. 33 Then they brought the tabernacle to Moses, the tent and all its utensils, its hooks, its frames, its bars, its pillars, and its bases;
  34. 34 the covering of tanned rams' skins and goatskins, and the veil of the screen;
  35. 35 the ark of the testimony with its poles and the mercy seat;
  36. 36 the table with all its utensils, and the bread of the Presence;
  37. 37 the lampstand of pure gold and its lamps with the lamps set and all its utensils, and the oil for the light;
  38. 38 the golden altar, the anointing oil and the fragrant incense, and the screen for the entrance of the tent;
  39. 39 the bronze altar, and its grating of bronze, its poles, and all its utensils; the basin and its stand;
  40. 40 the hangings of the court, its pillars, and its bases, and the screen for the gate of the court, its cords, and its pegs; and all the utensils for the service of the tabernacle, for the tent of meeting;
  41. 41 the finely worked garments for ministering in the Holy Place, the holy garments for Aaron the priest, and the garments of his sons for their service as priests.
  42. 42 According to all that the LORD had commanded Moses, so the people of Israel had done all the work.
  43. 43 And Moses saw all the work, and behold, they had done it; as the LORD had commanded, so had they done it. Then Moses blessed them.

Exodus chapter 39 nlt

  1. 1 The craftsmen made beautiful sacred garments of blue, purple, and scarlet cloth ? clothing for Aaron to wear while ministering in the Holy Place, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.
  2. 2 Bezalel made the ephod of finely woven linen and embroidered it with gold and with blue, purple, and scarlet thread.
  3. 3 He made gold thread by hammering out thin sheets of gold and cutting it into fine strands. With great skill and care, he worked it into the fine linen with the blue, purple, and scarlet thread.
  4. 4 The ephod consisted of two pieces, front and back, joined at the shoulders with two shoulder-pieces.
  5. 5 The decorative sash was made of the same materials: finely woven linen embroidered with gold and with blue, purple, and scarlet thread, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.
  6. 6 They mounted the two onyx stones in settings of gold filigree. The stones were engraved with the names of the tribes of Israel, just as a seal is engraved.
  7. 7 He fastened these stones on the shoulder-pieces of the ephod as a reminder that the priest represents the people of Israel. All this was done just as the LORD had commanded Moses.
  8. 8 Bezalel made the chestpiece with great skill and care. He made it to match the ephod, using finely woven linen embroidered with gold and with blue, purple, and scarlet thread.
  9. 9 He made the chestpiece of a single piece of cloth folded to form a pouch nine inches square.
  10. 10 They mounted four rows of gemstones on it. The first row contained a red carnelian, a pale-green peridot, and an emerald.
  11. 11 The second row contained a turquoise, a blue lapis lazuli, and a white moonstone.
  12. 12 The third row contained an orange jacinth, an agate, and a purple amethyst.
  13. 13 The fourth row contained a blue-green beryl, an onyx, and a green jasper. All these stones were set in gold filigree.
  14. 14 Each stone represented one of the twelve sons of Israel, and the name of that tribe was engraved on it like a seal.
  15. 15 To attach the chestpiece to the ephod, they made braided cords of pure gold thread.
  16. 16 They also made two settings of gold filigree and two gold rings and attached them to the top corners of the chestpiece.
  17. 17 They tied the two gold cords to the rings on the chestpiece.
  18. 18 They tied the other ends of the cords to the gold settings on the shoulder-pieces of the ephod.
  19. 19 Then they made two more gold rings and attached them to the inside edges of the chestpiece next to the ephod.
  20. 20 Then they made two more gold rings and attached them to the front of the ephod, below the shoulder-pieces, just above the knot where the decorative sash was fastened to the ephod.
  21. 21 They attached the bottom rings of the chestpiece to the rings on the ephod with blue cords. In this way, the chestpiece was held securely to the ephod above the decorative sash. All this was done just as the LORD had commanded Moses.
  22. 22 Bezalel made the robe that is worn with the ephod from a single piece of blue woven cloth,
  23. 23 with an opening for Aaron's head in the middle of it. The opening was reinforced with a woven collar so it would not tear.
  24. 24 They made pomegranates of blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and attached them to the hem of the robe.
  25. 25 They also made bells of pure gold and placed them between the pomegranates along the hem of the robe,
  26. 26 with bells and pomegranates alternating all around the hem. This robe was to be worn whenever the priest ministered before the LORD, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.
  27. 27 They made tunics for Aaron and his sons from fine linen cloth.
  28. 28 The turban and the special head coverings were made of fine linen, and the undergarments were also made of finely woven linen.
  29. 29 The sashes were made of finely woven linen and embroidered with blue, purple, and scarlet thread, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.
  30. 30 Finally, they made the sacred medallion ? the badge of holiness ? of pure gold. They engraved it like a seal with these words: HOLY TO THE LORD.
  31. 31 They attached the medallion with a blue cord to Aaron's turban, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.
  32. 32 And so at last the Tabernacle was finished. The Israelites had done everything just as the LORD had commanded Moses.
  33. 33 And they brought the entire Tabernacle to Moses: the sacred tent with all its furnishings, clasps, frames, crossbars, posts, and bases;
  34. 34 the tent coverings of tanned ram skins and fine goatskin leather;
    the inner curtain to shield the Ark;
  35. 35 the Ark of the Covenant and its carrying poles;
    the Ark's cover ? the place of atonement;
  36. 36 the table and all its utensils;
    the Bread of the Presence;
  37. 37 the pure gold lampstand with its symmetrical lamp cups, all its accessories, and the olive oil for lighting;
  38. 38 the gold altar;
    the anointing oil and fragrant incense;
    the curtain for the entrance of the sacred tent;
  39. 39 the bronze altar;
    the bronze grating and its carrying poles and utensils;
    the washbasin with its stand;
  40. 40 the curtains for the walls of the courtyard;
    the posts and their bases;
    the curtain for the entrance to the courtyard;
    the ropes and tent pegs;
    all the furnishings to be used in worship at the Tabernacle;
  41. 41 the beautifully stitched garments for the priests to wear while ministering in the Holy Place ? the sacred garments for Aaron the priest, and the garments for his sons to wear as they minister as priests.
  42. 42 So the people of Israel followed all of the LORD's instructions to Moses.
  43. 43 Then Moses inspected all their work. When he found it had been done just as the LORD had commanded him, he blessed them.
