2 Chronicles 23 meaning explained in AI Summary

This chapter recounts the overthrow of the wicked queen Athaliah and the restoration of the Davidic line to the throne of Judah in the person of the young Joash.

The Plot: Jehoiada the priest, fearing for the life of Joash, the rightful heir who was hidden as a baby, orchestrates a plan to depose Athaliah. He gathers the Levites and other loyal leaders, revealing to them Joash and securing their allegiance.

The Coronation: On the Sabbath, Jehoiada strategically positions armed guards around the temple and the young king. Joash is crowned and handed a copy of the covenant, symbolizing his authority. The people rejoice, blowing trumpets and singing praises.

Athaliah's Demise: Hearing the commotion, Athaliah rushes to the temple. She is appalled to witness the coronation and cries "Treason!" Jehoiada orders her arrest and execution, ensuring she is killed outside the temple courts to avoid defiling the sacred space.

A New Era: With Athaliah gone, Jehoiada leads the people in making a covenant with the Lord, pledging to follow Him and destroy the idols of Baal. They then demolish Baal's temple and execute Mattan, Baal's priest.

The Significance: This chapter highlights:

  • God's faithfulness: Despite the turmoil and usurpation of the throne, God preserves the Davidic line through Joash.
  • The courage of Jehoiada: He risks his life to protect Joash and restore rightful rule.
  • The importance of covenant: The chapter emphasizes the covenant between God and His people, renewed through Joash's coronation.
  • The dangers of idolatry: Athaliah's reign, marked by Baal worship, serves as a cautionary tale.

Overall, 2 Chronicles 23 is a dramatic account of divine intervention, political intrigue, and religious restoration, setting the stage for Joash's reign.

2 Chronicles 23 bible study ai commentary

The chapter details the divinely orchestrated overthrow of the usurper Queen Athaliah and the restoration of the rightful king, Joash, to the throne of Judah. This restoration is masterminded by the High Priest Jehoiada, highlighting the crucial role of the priesthood and the Temple in preserving the Davidic covenant when the monarchy itself had faltered. It is a story of covenant faithfulness, the eradication of apostasy, and the re-establishment of legitimate, God-ordained worship and governance.

2 Chronicles 23 Context

Following the disastrous alliance between the southern kingdom of Judah (house of David) and the apostate northern kingdom of Israel (house of Omri/Ahab), Athaliah—daughter of Ahab and Jezebel—became queen consort in Judah. After her son King Ahaziah was killed, she seized the throne and attempted to annihilate the entire Davidic royal line to secure her power. This action was a direct satanic and political assault on God's covenant promise to David (2 Sam 7) that his lineage would endure. For six years, she ruled and promoted Baal worship in Jerusalem, mirroring the idolatry of her parents. The entire plan of salvation through the promised Messiah, a descendant of David, was under threat. The young boy Joash, the sole surviving heir, was hidden by his aunt (Jehoiada's wife) in the Temple, which became a sanctuary for God's promise.

2 Chronicles 23:1-3

And in the seventh year Jehoiada strengthened himself and took for his captains of hundreds Azariah the son of Jeroham, and Ishmael the son of Jehohanan, and Azariah the son of Obed, and Maaseiah the son of Adaiah, and Elishaphat the son of Zichri, to be in covenant with him. And they went about in Judah and gathered the Levites out of all the cities of Judah, and the chief of the fathers of Israel, and they came to Jerusalem. And all the congregation made a covenant with the king in the house of God. And he said unto them, Behold, the king's son shall reign, as the LORD hath said of the sons of David.

In-depth-analysis

  • Jehoiada strengthened himself: This is not just mustering courage but acting with decisive faith and authority after six years of patient waiting. His action is a righteous counter-move to Athaliah's wicked coup.
  • Captains of Hundreds: He begins by securing the military leadership, ensuring the coup will be organized and effective. These are key influencers within Judah.
  • Gathered the Levites: A key detail highlighted by the Chronicler (and distinct from the 2 Kings account which focuses on the royal guard). By involving the Levites and heads of families from all of Judah, Jehoiada frames this not as a palace intrigue but as a national, spiritual restoration.
  • Made a covenant (karath berith): The foundation of the action is covenantal. It is grounded in God's pre-existing, unilateral covenant with David. Their new covenant is an agreement to uphold God's promise. The plan is presented as an act of faithfulness to God's word, not mere rebellion.
  • The King's son shall reign: Jehoiada directly quotes or alludes to the Davidic Covenant, making it clear this is about divine right, not personal ambition. This legitimizes the entire operation.

Bible references

  • 2 Sam 7:12, 16: 'I will raise up your offspring... and I will establish his kingdom. ...and your throne shall be established forever.' (The divine promise Jehoiada is upholding).
  • 2 Ki 11:4: '...he sent and brought the captains of the Carites and of the guard... and showed them the king's son.' (Parallel account, emphasizing military Carian mercenaries over Levites).
  • Ps 89:3-4: 'I have made a covenant with my chosen one; I have sworn to David my servant: "I will establish your offspring forever..."' (The psalm celebrating the Davidic covenant).

Cross references

2 Chronicles 23:4-7

This is the thing that ye shall do; A third part of you entering on the sabbath, of the priests and of the Levites, shall be porters of the doors; And a third part shall be at the king's house; and a third part at the gate of the foundation: and all the people shall be in the courts of the house of the LORD. But let none come into the house of the LORD, save the priests, and they that minister of the Levites; they shall go in, for they are holy: but all the people shall keep the watch of the LORD. And the Levites shall compass the king round about, every man with his weapons in his hand; and whosoever else cometh into the house, he shall be put to death: but be ye with the king, when he cometh in, and when he goeth out.

In-depth-analysis

  • Entering on the sabbath: Jehoiada chose the Sabbath. This was strategic: the changing of the Levitical guard provided cover for a large assembly of Levites at the Temple without raising suspicion. It also rooted this political act in a holy time.
  • Priests and... Levites: The Chronicler's emphasis is clear: the Temple guard for this operation is comprised of the sacred personnel. This contrasts with 2 Kings 11, which is more military in its description.
  • None come into the house... save the priests: Jehoiada is meticulous about observing Temple sanctity even during a coup. The people must remain in the outer courts; only the consecrated priests and ministering Levites, who are "holy" (qodesh), can enter the sacred building. This underscores that restoring God's King must be done God's way.
  • Whosoever else... shall be put to death: The order to kill any unauthorized person entering the Temple was not just for security, but to enforce the law of sanctity and prevent defilement.
  • Compass the king round about: The Levites form a human shield, armed and ready to protect the young king, who is the physical embodiment of God's covenant promise.

Bible references

  • 1 Chr 24:1-19: 'These are the divisions of the sons of Aaron... to come into the house of the Lord...' (David's organization of priests for Temple service, which Jehoiada restores).
  • Num 3:10, 38: '...you shall appoint Aaron and his sons, and they shall keep their priesthood. But the outsider who comes near shall be put to death.' (The Mosaic basis for Temple sanctity).

2 Chronicles 23:8-11

So the Levites and all Judah did according to all things that Jehoiada the priest had commanded... And he brought out the king's son, and put the crown upon him, and gave him the testimony, and made him king. And Jehoiada and his sons anointed him, and said, God save the king.

In-depth-analysis

  • All Judah did: Stresses the national unity and consensus behind this act.
  • Spears... of King David: This is a powerful symbolic act. Using the weapons that belonged to David and were stored in the Temple linked Joash's enthronement directly back to the founder of the dynasty. It symbolized a return to the legitimate, godly rule of David.
  • Put the crown upon him: The nezer (crown) symbolized royal authority.
  • Gave him the testimony: The 'edut (testimony) was most likely a scroll containing portions of the Law of Moses, specifically the laws for the king (cf. Deut 17). This act signified that the king was not absolute but ruled under the authority and law of God.
  • Anointed him: The anointing with oil consecrated the king for his office, setting him apart as the LORD's chosen leader.
  • God save the king: (Lit. "May the king live!") This was the traditional public acclamation, confirming the people's acceptance of their new monarch.

Bible references

  • Deut 17:18-19: '...he shall write for himself in a book a copy of this law... and he shall read in it all the days of his life...' (The "testimony" given to the king).
  • 1 Sam 16:13: 'Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon David...' (The model for anointing God's chosen king).
  • 1 Ki 1:39: 'There Zadok the priest took the horn of oil... and anointed Solomon. Then they blew the trumpet, and all the people said, "Long live King Solomon!"' (The precedent for Solomon's coronation).

Cross references

2 Chronicles 23:12-15

Now when Athaliah heard the noise of the people running and praising the king, she came to the people into the house of the LORD... and she rent her clothes, and said, Treason, Treason. Then Jehoiada the priest brought out the captains of hundreds... and said... Slay her not in the house of the LORD. So they laid hands on her; and when she was come to the entering of the horse gate by the king's house, they slew her there.

In-depth-analysis

  • Athaliah heard the noise: The celebration of true worship and kingship is what draws out the agent of apostasy and chaos.
  • Treason, Treason! (Qesher, qesher!): This is supremely ironic. The true traitor—the usurper, murderer, and idolater—accuses the loyalists of treason. Her reign began with bloodshed and usurpation; it ends with her being exposed by the legitimate order.
  • Slay her not in the house of the LORD: Again, Jehoiada’s primary concern is preventing the defilement of the Temple with human blood. The execution is just, but it must be carried out in a profane space, not a holy one. This reflects his deep piety.
  • The Horse Gate: Her execution at a gate associated with the royal palace and its military forces marks a fitting end. The power by which she reigned (earthly, military might) became the place of her judgment.

Bible references

  • 1 Ki 2:31-34: '...strike him down... that you may take away from me and from my father's house the guilt for the blood that Joab shed without cause.' (Solomon's command to execute Joab outside the sanctuary).
  • Rev 11:1-2: '...measure the temple of God and the altar and those who worship there, but do not measure the court outside the temple; leave that out, for it is given over to the nations...' (The principle of a protected, holy space amidst profane judgment).

Cross references

Est 7:10 (Haman hanged on his own gallows); Jer 31:40 (prophetic reference to Horse Gate area); Rev 19:20 (The beast and false prophet cast into the lake of fire).

2 Chronicles 23:16-21

And Jehoiada made a covenant between him, and between all the people, and between the king, that they should be the LORD's people. Then all the people went to the house of Baal, and brake it down, and brake his altars and his images in pieces, and slew Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. Also Jehoiada appointed the offices of the house of the LORD by the hand of the priests the Levites... Then he took the captains of hundreds, and the nobles, and the governors of the people, and all the people of the land, and brought down the king from the house of the LORD... and all the people of the land rejoiced: and the city was quiet, after that they had slain Athaliah with the sword.

In-depth-analysis

  • A covenant... to be the LORD's people: This moves beyond politics. Jehoiada leads the nation in a spiritual rededication. The primary identity of Judah is not allegiance to a human king, but to Yahweh. The human king is merely God's vice-regent.
  • Went to the house of Baal, and brake it down: The first act of a renewed people is to purge idolatry. True revival requires tearing down false altars. This is a direct reversal of Athaliah's influence and a public declaration of exclusive loyalty to God. The execution of Mattan, Baal's priest, parallels Elijah's execution of Baal's prophets.
  • Appointed the offices... by the hand of the priests the Levites: Jehoiada immediately restores the proper Davidic and Mosaic structures for Temple worship, including sacrifices and gatekeepers to maintain purity. He is restoring both King and Cult.
  • All the people... rejoiced: and the city was quiet: The chapter ends with the restoration of shalom (peace, order, well-being). The joy of the people and the quietness of the city stand in stark contrast to the chaos and violence of Athaliah's reign. True peace comes from right worship and right rule.

Bible references

  • Exo 24:7-8: '...and he took the Book of the Covenant and read it in the hearing of the people. And they said, "All that the LORD has spoken we will do..."' (Model of covenant renewal).
  • Deut 12:3: 'You shall tear down their altars and dash in pieces their pillars...' (Commandment to purge idolatry from the land).
  • 1 Chr 23-26: The detailed account of David organizing the priests and Levites for Temple service, which Jehoiada restored.
  • 2 Ki 18:4: 'He removed the high places and broke the pillars and cut down the Asherah...' (Hezekiah's later reforms, following this same pattern).

Polemics: This section is a powerful polemic against religious syncretism. For the original post-exilic audience, this story was a stark reminder that associating with foreign cults (like the Baalism of Athaliah) leads to national ruin and threatens the very existence of God's people. It champions a radical, exclusive fidelity to Yahweh, centered on the Temple and the Law of Moses, as the only path to security and blessing. The Chronicler makes it clear that the spiritual leader, the High Priest, was the hero who saved the physical line of David, elevating the role of the priesthood in the people's memory.

2 Chronicles chapter 23 analysis

  • Primacy of the Priesthood: Unlike the account in 2 Kings, the Chronicler makes the High Priest Jehoiada the undisputed hero and architect of the entire event. The Levites, not secular soldiers, are the main actors. This elevates the spiritual authority of the priesthood as the true guardian of the nation's covenant life, a vital message for the post-exilic community governed by priests.
  • Temple Centrality: The entire drama is staged in and around the Temple. It is the sanctuary for the king, the staging ground for the coup, the place of coronation, and the standard of purity against which Athaliah is judged. For the Chronicler, all national life, including political life, revolves around the "house of God."
  • Christological Foreshadowing (Typology): The story serves as a type for Christ. A rightful king (Joash, son of David) is hidden from a usurper who seeks to destroy him. After a period of darkness, he is revealed to the people by a faithful High Priest (Jehoiada). He is crowned, restores true worship, and brings peace. This pattern points toward Jesus, the true Son of David, hidden in obscurity, revealed at the appointed time, who overthrew the usurper (Satan), cleansed the temple, and established His reign, bringing true peace. Jehoiada acts as a type of God the Father, presenting His Son to the world.
  • The King Under Law: The act of giving the "testimony" ('edut) to the new king is profoundly significant. It visually and legally establishes that the Davidic king is not an absolute monarch but is himself subject to the higher law of God. His legitimacy is derived from and dependent upon his faithfulness to the Torah.

2 Chronicles 23 summary

After six years of hiding, the high priest Jehoiada executes a brilliant coup on the Sabbath, using the Levites as a holy guard. He reveals the boy Joash, the sole surviving heir to David's throne, and crowns him in the Temple. The usurper Queen Athaliah is captured and executed, but only outside the sacred Temple grounds. Jehoiada then leads the king and all the people in a national covenant renewal, pledging to be the Lord's people. Their first act is to completely destroy Jerusalem's temple to Baal and kill its priest, cleansing the land of idolatry. With proper Temple worship restored and the legitimate Davidic king enthroned, the city is filled with joy and peace.

  9. 9 Moreover Jehoiada the priest delivered to the captains of hundreds spears, and bucklers, and shields, that had been king David's, which were in the house of God.
  10. 10 And he set all the people, every man having his weapon in his hand, from the right side of the temple to the left side of the temple, along by the altar and the temple, by the king round about.
  11. 11 Then they brought out the king's son, and put upon him the crown, and gave him the testimony, and made him king. And Jehoiada and his sons anointed him, and said, God save the king.
  12. 12 Now when Athaliah heard the noise of the people running and praising the king, she came to the people into the house of the LORD:
  13. 13 And she looked, and, behold, the king stood at his pillar at the entering in, and the princes and the trumpets by the king: and all the people of the land rejoiced, and sounded with trumpets, also the singers with instruments of music, and such as taught to sing praise. Then Athaliah rent her clothes, and said, Treason, Treason.
  14. 14 Then Jehoiada the priest brought out the captains of hundreds that were set over the host, and said unto them, Have her forth of the ranges: and whoso followeth her, let him be slain with the sword. For the priest said, Slay her not in the house of the LORD.
  15. 15 So they laid hands on her; and when she was come to the entering of the horse gate by the king's house, they slew her there.

  18. 18 Also Jehoiada appointed the offices of the house of the LORD by the hand of the priests the Levites, whom David had distributed in the house of the LORD, to offer the burnt offerings of the LORD, as it is written in the law of Moses, with rejoicing and with singing, as it was ordained by David.
  19. 19 And he set the porters at the gates of the house of the LORD, that none which was unclean in any thing should enter in.
  20. 20 And he took the captains of hundreds, and the nobles, and the governors of the people, and all the people of the land, and brought down the king from the house of the LORD: and they came through the high gate into the king's house, and set the king upon the throne of the kingdom.
  21. 21 And all the people of the land rejoiced: and the city was quiet, after that they had slain Athaliah with the sword.

2 Chronicles chapter 23 nkjv

  1. 1 In the seventh year Jehoiada strengthened himself, and made a covenant with the captains of hundreds: Azariah the son of Jeroham, Ishmael the son of Jehohanan, Azariah the son of Obed, Maaseiah the son of Adaiah, and Elishaphat the son of Zichri.
  2. 2 And they went throughout Judah and gathered the Levites from all the cities of Judah, and the chief fathers of Israel, and they came to Jerusalem.
  3. 3 Then all the assembly made a covenant with the king in the house of God. And he said to them, "Behold, the king's son shall reign, as the LORD has said of the sons of David.
  4. 4 This is what you shall do: One-third of you entering on the Sabbath, of the priests and the Levites, shall be keeping watch over the doors;
  5. 5 one-third shall be at the king's house; and one-third at the Gate of the Foundation. All the people shall be in the courts of the house of the LORD.
  6. 6 But let no one come into the house of the LORD except the priests and those of the Levites who serve. They may go in, for they are holy; but all the people shall keep the watch of the LORD.
  7. 7 And the Levites shall surround the king on all sides, every man with his weapons in his hand; and whoever comes into the house, let him be put to death. You are to be with the king when he comes in and when he goes out."
  8. 8 So the Levites and all Judah did according to all that Jehoiada the priest commanded. And each man took his men who were to be on duty on the Sabbath, with those who were going off duty on the Sabbath; for Jehoiada the priest had not dismissed the divisions.
  9. 9 And Jehoiada the priest gave to the captains of hundreds the spears and the large and small shields which had belonged to King David, that were in the temple of God.
  10. 10 Then he set all the people, every man with his weapon in his hand, from the right side of the temple to the left side of the temple, along by the altar and by the temple, all around the king.
  11. 11 And they brought out the king's son, put the crown on him, gave him the Testimony, and made him king. Then Jehoiada and his sons anointed him, and said, "Long live the king!"
  12. 12 Now when Athaliah heard the noise of the people running and praising the king, she came to the people in the temple of the LORD.
  13. 13 When she looked, there was the king standing by his pillar at the entrance; and the leaders and the trumpeters were by the king. All the people of the land were rejoicing and blowing trumpets, also the singers with musical instruments, and those who led in praise. So Athaliah tore her clothes and said, "Treason! Treason!"
  14. 14 And Jehoiada the priest brought out the captains of hundreds who were set over the army, and said to them, "Take her outside under guard, and slay with the sword whoever follows her." For the priest had said, "Do not kill her in the house of the LORD."
  15. 15 So they seized her; and she went by way of the entrance of the Horse Gate into the king's house, and they killed her there.
  16. 16 Then Jehoiada made a covenant between himself, the people, and the king, that they should be the LORD's people.
  17. 17 And all the people went to the temple of Baal, and tore it down. They broke in pieces its altars and images, and killed Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars.
  18. 18 Also Jehoiada appointed the oversight of the house of the LORD to the hand of the priests, the Levites, whom David had assigned in the house of the LORD, to offer the burnt offerings of the LORD, as it is written in the Law of Moses, with rejoicing and with singing, as it was established by David.
  19. 19 And he set the gatekeepers at the gates of the house of the LORD, so that no one who was in any way unclean should enter.
  20. 20 Then he took the captains of hundreds, the nobles, the governors of the people, and all the people of the land, and brought the king down from the house of the LORD; and they went through the Upper Gate to the king's house, and set the king on the throne of the kingdom.
  21. 21 So all the people of the land rejoiced; and the city was quiet, for they had slain Athaliah with the sword.

2 Chronicles chapter 23 niv

  1. 1 In the seventh year Jehoiada showed his strength. He made a covenant with the commanders of units of a hundred: Azariah son of Jeroham, Ishmael son of Jehohanan, Azariah son of Obed, Maaseiah son of Adaiah, and Elishaphat son of Zikri.
  2. 2 They went throughout Judah and gathered the Levites and the heads of Israelite families from all the towns. When they came to Jerusalem,
  3. 3 the whole assembly made a covenant with the king at the temple of God. Jehoiada said to them, "The king's son shall reign, as the LORD promised concerning the descendants of David.
  4. 4 Now this is what you are to do: A third of you priests and Levites who are going on duty on the Sabbath are to keep watch at the doors,
  5. 5 a third of you at the royal palace and a third at the Foundation Gate, and all the others are to be in the courtyards of the temple of the LORD.
  6. 6 No one is to enter the temple of the LORD except the priests and Levites on duty; they may enter because they are consecrated, but all the others are to observe the LORD's command not to enter.
  7. 7 The Levites are to station themselves around the king, each with weapon in hand. Anyone who enters the temple is to be put to death. Stay close to the king wherever he goes."
  8. 8 The Levites and all the men of Judah did just as Jehoiada the priest ordered. Each one took his men?those who were going on duty on the Sabbath and those who were going off duty?for Jehoiada the priest had not released any of the divisions.
  9. 9 Then he gave the commanders of units of a hundred the spears and the large and small shields that had belonged to King David and that were in the temple of God.
  10. 10 He stationed all the men, each with his weapon in his hand, around the king?near the altar and the temple, from the south side to the north side of the temple.
  11. 11 Jehoiada and his sons brought out the king's son and put the crown on him; they presented him with a copy of the covenant and proclaimed him king. They anointed him and shouted, "Long live the king!"
  12. 12 When Athaliah heard the noise of the people running and cheering the king, she went to them at the temple of the LORD.
  13. 13 She looked, and there was the king, standing by his pillar at the entrance. The officers and the trumpeters were beside the king, and all the people of the land were rejoicing and blowing trumpets, and musicians with their instruments were leading the praises. Then Athaliah tore her robes and shouted, "Treason! Treason!"
  14. 14 Jehoiada the priest sent out the commanders of units of a hundred, who were in charge of the troops, and said to them: "Bring her out between the ranks and put to the sword anyone who follows her." For the priest had said, "Do not put her to death at the temple of the LORD."
  15. 15 So they seized her as she reached the entrance of the Horse Gate on the palace grounds, and there they put her to death.
  16. 16 Jehoiada then made a covenant that he, the people and the king would be the LORD's people.
  17. 17 All the people went to the temple of Baal and tore it down. They smashed the altars and idols and killed Mattan the priest of Baal in front of the altars.
  18. 18 Then Jehoiada placed the oversight of the temple of the LORD in the hands of the Levitical priests, to whom David had made assignments in the temple, to present the burnt offerings of the LORD as written in the Law of Moses, with rejoicing and singing, as David had ordered.
  19. 19 He also stationed gatekeepers at the gates of the LORD's temple so that no one who was in any way unclean might enter.
  20. 20 He took with him the commanders of hundreds, the nobles, the rulers of the people and all the people of the land and brought the king down from the temple of the LORD. They went into the palace through the Upper Gate and seated the king on the royal throne.
  21. 21 All the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was calm, because Athaliah had been slain with the sword.

  2. 2 And they went about through Judah and gathered the Levites from all the cities of Judah, and the heads of fathers' houses of Israel, and they came to Jerusalem.

  4. 4 This is the thing that you shall do: of you priests and Levites who come off duty on the Sabbath, one third shall be gatekeepers,
  5. 5 and one third shall be at the king's house and one third at the Gate of the Foundation. And all the people shall be in the courts of the house of the LORD.
  6. 6 Let no one enter the house of the LORD except the priests and ministering Levites. They may enter, for they are holy, but all the people shall keep the charge of the LORD.
  7. 7 The Levites shall surround the king, each with his weapons in his hand. And whoever enters the house shall be put to death. Be with the king when he comes in and when he goes out."
  8. 8 The Levites and all Judah did according to all that Jehoiada the priest commanded, and they each brought his men, who were to go off duty on the Sabbath, with those who were to come on duty on the Sabbath, for Jehoiada the priest did not dismiss the divisions.
  9. 9 And Jehoiada the priest gave to the captains the spears and the large and small shields that had been King David's, which were in the house of God.
  10. 10 And he set all the people as a guard for the king, every man with his weapon in his hand, from the south side of the house to the north side of the house, around the altar and the house.
  11. 11 Then they brought out the king's son and put the crown on him and gave him the testimony. And they proclaimed him king, and Jehoiada and his sons anointed him, and they said, "Long live the king."
  12. 12 When Athaliah heard the noise of the people running and praising the king, she went into the house of the LORD to the people.
  13. 13 And when she looked, there was the king standing by his pillar at the entrance, and the captains and the trumpeters beside the king, and all the people of the land rejoicing and blowing trumpets, and the singers with their musical instruments leading in the celebration. And Athaliah tore her clothes and cried, "Treason! Treason!"
  14. 14 Then Jehoiada the priest brought out the captains who were set over the army, saying to them, "Bring her out between the ranks, and anyone who follows her is to be put to death with the sword." For the priest said, "Do not put her to death in the house of the LORD."
  15. 15 So they laid hands on her, and she went into the entrance of the horse gate of the king's house, and they put her to death there.
  16. 16 And Jehoiada made a covenant between himself and all the people and the king that they should be the LORD's people.
  17. 17 Then all the people went to the house of Baal and tore it down; his altars and his images they broke in pieces, and they killed Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars.
  18. 18 And Jehoiada posted watchmen for the house of the LORD under the direction of the Levitical priests and the Levites whom David had organized to be in charge of the house of the LORD, to offer burnt offerings to the LORD, as it is written in the Law of Moses, with rejoicing and with singing, according to the order of David.
  19. 19 He stationed the gatekeepers at the gates of the house of the LORD so that no one should enter who was in any way unclean.
  20. 20 And he took the captains, the nobles, the governors of the people, and all the people of the land, and they brought the king down from the house of the LORD, marching through the upper gate to the king's house. And they set the king on the royal throne.
  21. 21 So all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet after Athaliah had been put to death with the sword.

2 Chronicles chapter 23 nlt

  1. 1 In the seventh year of Athaliah's reign, Jehoiada the priest decided to act. He summoned his courage and made a pact with five army commanders: Azariah son of Jeroham, Ishmael son of Jehohanan, Azariah son of Obed, Maaseiah son of Adaiah, and Elishaphat son of Zicri.
  2. 2 These men traveled secretly throughout Judah and summoned the Levites and clan leaders in all the towns to come to Jerusalem.
  3. 3 They all gathered at the Temple of God, where they made a solemn pact with Joash, the young king. Jehoiada said to them, "Here is the king's son! The time has come for him to reign! The LORD has promised that a descendant of David will be our king.
  4. 4 This is what you must do. When you priests and Levites come on duty on the Sabbath, a third of you will serve as gatekeepers.
  5. 5 Another third will go over to the royal palace, and the final third will be at the Foundation Gate. Everyone else should stay in the courtyards of the LORD's Temple.
  6. 6 Remember, only the priests and Levites on duty may enter the Temple of the LORD, for they are set apart as holy. The rest of the people must obey the LORD's instructions and stay outside.
  7. 7 You Levites, form a bodyguard around the king and keep your weapons in hand. Kill anyone who tries to enter the Temple. Stay with the king wherever he goes."
  8. 8 So the Levites and all the people of Judah did everything as Jehoiada the priest ordered. The commanders took charge of the men reporting for duty that Sabbath, as well as those who were going off duty. Jehoiada the priest did not let anyone go home after their shift ended.
  9. 9 Then Jehoiada supplied the commanders with the spears and the large and small shields that had once belonged to King David and were stored in the Temple of God.
  10. 10 He stationed all the people around the king, with their weapons ready. They formed a line from the south side of the Temple around to the north side and all around the altar.
  11. 11 Then Jehoiada and his sons brought out Joash, the king's son, placed the crown on his head, and presented him with a copy of God's laws. They anointed him and proclaimed him king, and everyone shouted, "Long live the king!"
  12. 12 When Athaliah heard the noise of the people running and the shouts of praise to the king, she hurried to the LORD's Temple to see what was happening.
  13. 13 When she arrived, she saw the newly crowned king standing in his place of authority by the pillar at the Temple entrance. The commanders and trumpeters were surrounding him, and people from all over the land were rejoicing and blowing trumpets. Singers with musical instruments were leading the people in a great celebration. When Athaliah saw all this, she tore her clothes in despair and shouted, "Treason! Treason!"
  14. 14 Then Jehoiada the priest ordered the commanders who were in charge of the troops, "Take her to the soldiers in front of the Temple, and kill anyone who tries to rescue her." For the priest had said, "She must not be killed in the Temple of the LORD."
  15. 15 So they seized her and led her out to the entrance of the Horse Gate on the palace grounds, and they killed her there.
  16. 16 Then Jehoiada made a covenant between himself and the king and the people that they would be the LORD's people.
  17. 17 And all the people went over to the temple of Baal and tore it down. They demolished the altars and smashed the idols, and they killed Mattan the priest of Baal in front of the altars.
  18. 18 Jehoiada now put the priests and Levites in charge of the Temple of the LORD, following all the directions given by David. He also commanded them to present burnt offerings to the LORD, as prescribed by the Law of Moses, and to sing and rejoice as David had instructed.
  19. 19 He also stationed gatekeepers at the gates of the LORD's Temple to keep out those who for any reason were ceremonially unclean.
  20. 20 Then the commanders, nobles, rulers, and all the people of the land escorted the king from the Temple of the LORD. They went through the upper gate and into the palace, and they seated the king on the royal throne.
  21. 21 So all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was peaceful because Athaliah had been killed.
